Anna Toke registered a double-double with 15 points and a career-high 18 rebounds as the Stevens Institute of Technology women's basketball team defeated non-conference opponent Western Connecticut State University 75-57 in the season opener Thursday night at Feldman Arena.
Freshman forward
Jess Broad chipped in 14 points for the Ducks, while sophomores
Lily Taeuber and
Sam Winter also finished in double figures, adding 12 and 11 points, respectively.
Gabrielle Hurlbert came off the bench to lead the Pioneers with 12 points and Asish Knight pulled down a team-high six rebounds, as Western Connecticut dropped their first game of the year.
Turning Point
- Stevens started the game with a 17-5 run, a lead the Ducks would never relinquish.
Inside the Numbers
- Western Connecticut finished the night with 11-made three-pointers, while the Ducks only hit three from behind the arc.
- Stevens held the edge in rebounds (58-40), assists (17-10) and steals (20-17).
- The Pioneers out-blocked the Ducks, 8-4.
- Stevens finished 55.2% from the charity stripe, going 16-for-29, while Western Connecticut was close behind with a free throw percentage of 54.5.
- Broad recorded a game-high seven steals.
- Sophomore Annetta Panayides registered a team-high two blocks.
- Toke tied her career-high of five steals.
