Goals in full supply as No. 19 Men’s Lacrosse tops Arcadia

HOBOKEN, N.J. (February 17, 2018)  – Four players scored two or more goals, including four each from seniors Tommy Dawson and John Boutureira, as No. 19 Stevens Institute of Technology men's lacrosse team opened the 2018 campaign with a 19-4 victory over Arcadia University on Saturday afternoon in a non-conference contest at the DeBaun Athletic Complex.

Freshman Ryan Gebhardt also registered a hat trick for the Ducks, who crossed the 19-goal plateau on five occasions in 2017. Classmates Nico Ipeker and Tim Spears each found the back of the net for Stevens, who has won all three meetings with the Knights. The Ducks have won 12 consecutive season-openers dating back to the 2007 season.

Clo Muscara scored twice and Nick Ferraro collected a pair of assists for Arcadia, who saw its two-game winning streak come to and end. The Knights won their final two contests in 2017.

Eric Radbourne found the back of the net twice in the opening three minutes to give Stevens an early lead. Junior Max Bailey joined Spears and Boutureira in collecting first-quarter scores give Stevens a five-goal lead after the opening 15 minutes. Bailey finished the day with a goal and seven assists to lead all players. The Millersville, Maryland native totaled eight points in Stevens' season-opening win over Arcadia in 2017.

Dawson notched his first goal of the game to open second-period scoring. The team's second-leading scorer in 2017, the Virginia Beach, Virginia native finished the day with five points. Arcadia finally broke through against junior Carson White when Arcadia's leading scorer in 2017, Austin Williams, found the back of the net at the 4:36 mark. Stevens quickly returned fire when Boutureira and senior Bryan Rogers connected for consecutive goals less than 100 seconds apart. Rogers' tally came on a man-up situation. Gebhardt rounded out first-half scoring, deftly beating A.J. Beck over the right shoulder.

Arcadia scored twice in the first minute of play in the third quarter, but consecutive goals by Boutureira reclaimed an eight-goal cushion for the hosts. Muscara beat sophomore Jack Braswell, who relieved White at the start of the third quarter, for his second goal of the game, but the Lancaster, Pennsylvania native made two saves in the fourth quarter and a stingy and physical defensive unit only allowed three Arcadia shots over the final 26 minutes to prevent any further damage. Freshman Danny Tierney made his collegiate debut and played a scoreless seven minutes.

Stevens scored the final eight goals of the game, including tallies from sophomores Brendan Monteleone and Nick Marra as part of a four-goal final period. On the afternoon, the Ducks outshot Arcadia 57-14 and held a 38-7 advantage in shots on goal. White made one save to earn the victory, while Beck made 19 saves in a losing effort.

Defensively, Stevens forced 31 Arcadia turnovers, with senior Rob Williams causing a game-high six. The Ducks picked up 36 ground balls to Arcadia's 20, although the Knights did hold a 14-12 margin in faceoff wins.

With the man-advantage, Stevens was successful on three of its nine opportunities, while the Knights converted 1-of-7.

Up Next: Stevens travels to Beverly, Massachusetts for a non-conference matchup with Endicott College on February 24. The Ducks have taken two of the last three matchups from the Gulls, however, only one goal separates the teams over the three contests.
