TEANECK, N.J. (February 25, 2018) – The Stevens Institute of Technology women's fencing team swept Wagner, Hunter, Tufts, Queens and host FDU on Sunday to complete a 32-3 regular season. Not only is 32 wins five more than the second-best season in school history, but three losses ties the record for the fewest losses in a season from an era when the Ducks competed only 20 times a year.
The Castle Pointers have defeated every Division III team on their schedule this season, with the only losses coming to Top-15 Division I programs Northwestern, Columbia and Boston College. Not surprisingly, they have also established a new school-record for winning percentage at .914, the first team to be over .900.
Stevens had little trouble on Sunday, winning each matchup save one by double-digits, and that was an 18-9 victory over Tufts University.
Abby Kaye went 14-0 at foil to lead the Ducks. She finished her dual-meet career with a school-record 298 victories, just missing becoming the first Stevens fencer to reach 300 career wins.
There were many other successes on Sunday. Kaye's foil teammates
Nicole Strezewski (12-1) and
Allison Urban-Spillane (10-0) posted excellent days.
At epee,
Julie McEldoon and
Erin Hatcher won 12 and 11 matchups, respectively, and
Amanda Choy was right behind with nine wins.
Karen Kong and
Michelle Drobish posted identical 11-4 records at sabre to lead that squad.
