No. 39 Men’s Tennis downs Ithaca 8-1 in Spring Break Opener

  • Short Story: No. 39 Stevens Institute of Technology Men's Tennis opened its annual Spring Break Trip with an 8-1 victory over former Empire 8 Conference rival, Ithaca College, Monday at the United States Tennis Association National Campus in Orlando, Florida. The decisive win was Men's Tennis' first of the 2017-18 season.

How It Happened
  • Stevens won all three doubles matches to take a 3-0 lead.
  • Senior David Schulz and freshman Gabriel Sifuentes began the day with an 8-3 win at third doubles.
  • Senior Kyle Henry and freshman Mark Kanevsky took and 8-6 victory at second doubles and the senior pairing of Danny Polk and William Persson won 8-5 at No. 1 doubles to complete the doubles sweep. 
  • The dominating performance by Men's Tennis carried over to the singles portion of the match, with the Ducks earning wins in five of the six flights to close out the match.
  • Ithaca earned its only victory of the day at second singles, and needed a super tiebreaker in the final set to earn the win.
  • Polk, Schulz and Sifuentes each won their second matches of the day with straight-set wins at No. 1, No. 3 and No. 6 singles, respectively.
  • Kanevsky outlasted Ithaca's Max Prestwich in three sets at No. 3 singles to also earn a second victory.
  • Freshman Bryan Szayna won in straight sets at fifth singles to round out the scoring.

  • Gabriel Sifuentes (STEVENS) def. George Lomas (ITHACA) 6-0, 6-1

  • "The conditions were difficult with very high winds throughout the match. We showed a lot of mental toughness and perseverance during the doubles [matches] and came through big, earning a 3-0 lead heading into singles. I'm very proud of how we continued to battle in singles and look forward to the challenge of facing a tough RPI team tomorrow."
