HOBOKEN, N.J. (August 31, 2018) – Senior
Daniel Aversano collected his second career hat trick as No. 15 Stevens Institute of Technology Men's Soccer opened the 2018 campaign with a 4-0 victory over Fairleigh Dickinson University-Florham Campus Friday evening in a non-conference fixture at the DeBaun Athletic Complex.
Freshman
Jay Poskitt also found the back of the net for his first collegiate goal, and three different players registered an assist for the Ducks, who won on opening night for the third time in the last four seasons.
Parker Malman made eight saves for the Devils, who fell to 0-1. FDU-Florham is winless over its last 13 non-conference fixtures.
Turning Point
- After a tight opening half, which only produced a one-goal lead, Aversano provided Stevens with a little breathing room, converting a goal after Malman deflected senior Chris Cesario's penalty shot attempt.
- Malman's deflection slid to the Upper Saddle River, New Jersey native's left foot and Aversano quickly fired the ball past Malman for his second goal of the game.
- Aversano completed the hat trick 14 minutes, converting a Cristiano Hocken feed after a long run. Aversano's previous three-goal performance came against Berkeley College (N.Y.) on October 26, 2016.
Inside the Numbers
- Stevens outshot FDU 26-2, including a decisive 13-0 edge in shots on net.
- The Ducks held a 9-0 edge in corner kicks and a 3-0 advantage in penalty kicks.
- Senior Aaron Henry posted his 11th career clean sheet. The Fayetteville, Arkansas native totaled 8 in 2016.
- Cesario led all players with five shots and three shots on goal. The forward nearly had a spectacular second-half goal with a header that drifted just wide.
- Thirteen different players fired a shot for Stevens.
Unsung Hero
- Drawing a start in his first collegiate contest, in addition to being part of a defensive unie that spun an opening-night shutout, freshman Seth Onolaja was able to be a key contributor offensively, despite not finding the scoresheet. The Joppa, Maryland native went on several long runs throughout the night, which caused the FDU defense to scramble out of system.
