HOBOKEN, N.J. (September 1, 2018) – Sophomore
Stephen Johnson and freshman
Adam Silva each recorded their first collegiate goals to lead No. 15 Stevens Institute of Technology Men's Soccer to a 2-0 shutout of Mitchell College Saturday evening in a non-conference fixture at the DeBaun Athletic Complex.
Senior goalkeeper
Aaron Henry made one save to post his second straight clean sheet. The Fayetteville, Arkansas native moved into a tie with alumnus Tim Donovan for sixth place in program history with 12 career shutouts.
Seth Strader made five saves and Diego Di Carlantonio recorded a shot on goal for Mitchell, who is winless over its last four season openers. It was the first-ever meeting between the programs.
Turning Point
- Stevens broke through at nearly the identical time as it did one night ago.
- Senior Andrew Masur was awarded a free kick. The Bridgewater, New Jersey native lined up his placement, only to have his attempt redirected by the Mitchell wall.
- The loose ball was picked up in space by Johnson, who lofted a shot high into the top right corner of the goal, well beyond Strader's reach.
- The marker came on the 16th career shot for the Oceanport, N.J. native, who did not record a point in 21 matches last season.
Inside the Numbers
- Stevens outshot Mitchell 16-4, including a 7-1 edge in shots on goal. Over its first two matches, the Ducks have outshot opponents 42-6.
- Sustained offense led to six corners for the Ducks. Mitchell did not earn a corner. Stevens has not allowed either of its first two opponents to earn a corner kick.
- Masur led all players with three shots.
- Seven different Ducks recorded a shot on goal.
- One night after tallying his first collegiate point, Silva converted a long throw-in from sophomore Kevin Brito for his first career goal.
Unsung Heroes
- The senior defensive tandem of Nicholas Cousillas and Jimmy Doran provided a huge lift in the first half, winning nearly every 50-50 ball for the team, often stepping around or in front of the positional counterparts. For the second straight night, Stevens' aggressive play did not allow its opponent to settle into any offensive rhythm, while keeping possession out of dangerous areas.
