Women's Tennis cruises past Alfred

HOBOKEN, N.J. (September 22, 2018) – The Stevens Institute of Technology women's tennis team returned to the win column Saturday with an 8-1 victory over Alfred University in an Empire 8 Conference match on the Stevens Tennis Courts. On the first official day of fall, the Ducks handed Alfred their first conference loss of the season, improving to 3-1. Alfred drops to 5-4 on the season and 4-1 in the Empire 8.

Senior Julia Earl and Sophomore Makenna Sargis put together a decisive 8-1 win at No. 2 doubles to put the first point on the board for the Ducks. Freshman Alexis Fuda saw her first action of the season when she was paired with senior Sydney Zoretic at No. 3 doubles. The duo was very impressive and posted 8-3 victory against Miranda Sakala and Rachel Pera. Freshman Agatha Malinowski and junior Isabella Calandra continued their winning ways in the No. 1 doubles spot by following suit with an 8-3 win.

Freshman Alexis Fuda was equally impressive in her singles flight by blanking her opponent 6-0, 6-0 in the No. 6 spot. Senior Julia Earl put together a strong performance in her No. 2 single flight by also posting a 6-0, 6-0 win to clinch the match for the Ducks. After being in a competitive first set that was won in a tiebreaker, sophomore Chelsea Braithwaite closed out her match by winning the second set 6-1. Freshman Agatha Malinowski and sophomore Makenna Sargis also posted single flight wins in the No. 1 and No. 5, respectively, to put points on the board for the women's tennis team. Head Coach Steve Gachko was pleased with what he saw today and hopes the team can build off this performance.

"I'm proud of how our girls competed today against a gritty Alfred team," said Head Coach Steve Gachko. "I'm excited for us to build upon today's success and come out with improved confidence against St. John Fisher tomorrow."

Up Next: Women's tennis will be back on its home courts tomorrow, September 23rd, when they take on St. John Fisher in another Empire 8 conference match up.
