No. 22 Men’s Soccer extends unbeaten streak with victory over Alfred

HOBOKEN, N.J. (September 22, 2018)  – No. 22 Stevens Institute of Technology men's soccer moved to 2-0 in the Empire 8 Conference with a 2-1 victory over Alfred University Saturday at the DeBaun Athletic Complex.

Freshmen Adam Silva and Leo Musacchia each found the back of the net for Stevens, who extended its unbeaten streak to seven. The Ducks improved to 8-1-1 on the year.

Goalkeeper Joe Gonzalez made seven saves and Cody Cronmiller scored on a penalty kick for Alfred, who dropped its second consecutive match. The Saxons fell to 2-7 on the year and 1-1 in league matches.

Senior Aaron Henry earned the victory in net for Stevens. The Fayetteville, Arkansas native continues to lead the conference with a .599 goals against average.

Pivotal Point
  • After a possession battle over the first 40 minutes, Silva broke through in the 42nd minute.
  • Freshman Justin Kochman played a long ball that navigated through the Alfred defense, finding Silva in stride.
  • Silva nimbly dribbled around Gonzalez and calmly pushed the ball into the net for his sixth goal of the year. It was Kochman's first career assist.

Inside the Numbers
  • The Ducks held a 23-6 edge in shots, including a 9-1 mark in shots on net. The shot disparity was particularly evident in the second half, where Stevens outshot Alfred 16-1.
  • The tilted offensive play resulted in a 9-0 advantage for Stevens in corner kicks.
  • Stevens had a golden opportunity in the 87th minute. Silva played a ball on net, which Gonzalez deflected. Aversano followed up on the play with a strong chance that rang off the crossbar.
  • The Ducks continue to place an emphasis on winning the first half. Silva's marker was the ninth goal scored by Stevens in the opening half. The team has yet to allow a first-half goal.
  • Silva continues to lead the conference with six goals and 15 points. The Ducks have not had a double-digit goal scorer since 2015.
  • Musacchia's second-half tally was the Dix Hills, New York native's first collegiate point.

Unsung Heroes
  • Controlled play in the midfield kept the Saxons' leading scorer, Alexander Tostanoski off the scoresheet, allowing just one shot to the senior forward.
