Men’s Soccer blanks Houghton to extend unbeaten streak to eight

HOUGHTON, N.Y. (September 29, 2018)  – Freshman Seth Onolaja recorded his first career goal and senior Daniel Aversano provided an insurance goal in the 88th minute as the Stevens Institute of Technology men's soccer team defeated Houghton College 2-0 Saturday in an Empire 8 Conference fixture at Burke Field.

After the teams battled through a scoreless first half, Onolaja broke through in the 67th minute. Freshman Adam Silva took a corner kick, which Houghton successfully cleared. Onolaja corralled the loose ball and a looping ball over the head of Houghton goalkeeper Caleb Loew for his first career goal. The Joppa, Maryland native recorded his first career point with an assist Vassar on Sept. 8.

Aaron Henry earned his seventh win of the year for Ducks, who improved to 9-1-1 on the year and a perfect 3-0 in conference play. Loew made seven saves for the Highlanders, who fell to 3-6 on the year and 1-2 in league play. Stevens has won four of the last five meetings between the teams.

Aversano gave Stevens some breathing room late in the second half, beating Loew one-on-one after taking a nifty pass from freshman Sean Masur, who went on a long run through midfield before feeding Aversano. The Upper Saddle River, N.J. native then calmly finished in the bottom corner of the goal for his fifth marker of the season.

Inside the Numbers
  • Stevens held a 16-4 advantage in shots, with a 9-0 edge in shots on net. The Ducks held the Highlanders to a single shot in the second half.
  • Aversano led all players with five shots and three shots on net.
  • Each team took five corner kicks.
  • The shutout extended Stevens' strong performance in the first half. The Ducks continue to keep opponents off the board over the first 45 minutes.

Unsung Heroes
  • Senior Aaron Henry posted his fifth shutout of the season, bring his career total to 15, which is good for fifth in program history. The Fayetteville, Arkansas native is one away from matching Mike Renna for fourth all-time. Henry's 0.54 goals against average would be eighth-lowest mark in program history.

From the Sidelines
  • "Credit to the guys for battling hard against very good Houghton side."
  • "We started well, but then lost our way. Second half performance was much better."
