Women's Tennis Impresses in Home Opener

HOBOKEN, N.J. (September 8, 2018) - The Stevens Institute of Technology women's tennis team put together a dominant performance in their season opener against Utica College 9-0 Saturday in an Empire 8 Conference matchup at the Stevens Tennis Courts.

Freshman Agatha Malinowski made her collegiate debut and did not drop a single point across her singles and doubles matches.

Stevens won its season opener for the second time in three seasons, while Utica fell to 0-2.

The Ducks jumped out to a 3-0 lead after doubles play. Junior Isabella Calandra paired with Malinowski to win 8-0 at No. 1 doubles, while the team of senior Jill Hawden and junior Joilin Gomez posted the same margin of victory at third doubles. Senior captains Julia Earl and Sydney Zorectic recorded a 8-1 win at second doubles to complete the pairs sweep. Combined, the Ducks went an impressive 24-1 in the three doubles flights.

The women's tennis team was equally impressive in their single match ups, with all six matches ending in straight sets. Malinowski and Calandra, along with senior Victoria Piskarev and sophomores Chelsea Braithwaite and Makenna Sargis each did not drop a point. Earl posted a 6-1, 6-0 victory at second singles to close out the season-opening victory.

"It was great to start off the season with a win in our home opener with Utica," said head coach Steve Gachko. "We had to battle with some tough weather conditions today and the girls stayed focused from start to finish."

Up Next: The women's tennis team will look to build off this momentum as they hit the road next week for three solid match ups, starting with Stockton University on Wednesday, September 12.
