Women's Basketball Falls to Nazareth in Overtime

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (January 11, 2019)  – Graduate student Anna Toke recorded her third double-double of the season tying her career-high of 23 points and 15 rebounds, but the Stevens Institute of Technology women's basketball team fell to Empire 8 opponent Nazareth 83-78 in overtime on Friday evening at Kidera Gymnasium.

Freshman Jess Broad added 15 points on 7-of-11 shooting while classmate Allie Moss chipped in a career-high 12 points for the Ducks, who fell to 7-6 on the year and 2-2 in the E8.

Rachel Benedict registered a double-double for Nazareth with a game-high 26 points along with 11 rebounds. The Golden Flyers improved to 8-4 this season and a perfect 3-0 in conference play.

The Ducks opened the fourth quarter with a good layup by Toke to tie the game 52-52. Sophomore Christina Li then put Stevens in the lead after knocking down a three-pointer. Benedict responded with a three to tie the game up once again.

After trading points for the majority of the fourth quarter, Broad tied the game at 66 with 39 seconds left in regulation. The Marlboro, New Jersey native stole the ball on the next play to give the Ducks possession once again.

Before the shot clock expired, Moss connected with Toke in the paint for a good layup to put the Ducks up by two with eight seconds remaining. Stevens then committed a foul on Benedict, who made both of her shots from the charity stripe to tie the game at 68.

Stevens took a 30-second timeout after the foul shots in order to advance the ball to half court. Broad inbounded the ball to Toke, who handed the ball back to Broad for a baseline jumper that missed, sending the game into overtime.

The Golden Flyers began the extra minutes with back-to-back layups, giving Nazareth a four point lead. A good jumper by Broad followed by two made free-throws by sophomore Maddi Hahn tied the game 72-72. On the next play, Benedict hit her third trey of the night to put Nazareth back in the lead.

Three made free-throws by the Flyers gave them a six-point cushion with 1:45 to go. The Ducks pushed the ball up the floor to Moss, who was fouled on the block. The Raleigh, North Carolina made both her foul shots to shorten Nazareth's lead to four.

On the Ducks' next possession, sophomore Sam Winter dished the ball to Toke for a layup, bringing Stevens back within two. The Flyers extended their lead back to four on the next play when Demetria Woodard made a jump shot from behind the foul line. Woodard then turned around and fouled Toke, who once again brought Steven back within two points after making both of her free throws.

Two fouls committed by the Ducks in the final 15 seconds allowed Nazareth to make three of their final four foul shots and come away with the win.
