Women’s Basketball Opens E8 Play With Win Over Elmira

HOBOKEN, N.J. (January 4, 2019)  – Sophomore Maddi Hahn scored a team-high 15 points as the Stevens Institute of Technology women's basketball team defeated Elmira 79-57 in their Empire 8 conference opener Friday evening at Canavan Arena. 

Sophomore Sam Winter added 10 points for the Ducks, while graduate student Anna Toke and sophomore Annetta Panayides each pulled down seven rebounds. Stevens improved to 6-1 on the year and 1-0 in E8 action. 

Elmira's Sally Hogan led all players with 17 points, while teammate Lauren Franklin pulled down a game-high 11 boards. The Soaring Eagles fell to 4-5 this season and 0-1 in conference play. 

After a close first quarter that saw five lead changes, freshman Allie Moss gave the Ducks a one-point lead heading into the second quarter after hitting a buzzer-beater three from just across the half court line. 

Alyssa Waters opened the second quarter with a jumper in the paint to put Elmira ahead by one, but a good jump shot from freshman Jess Broad gave the Ducks a lead they would never relinquish.  

Turning Point
  • Stevens went on a 16-0 run capped off by back-to-back buckets from Toke to allow the Ducks to distance themselves from the Soaring Eagles. 

Inside the Numbers
  • Waters led all players with four assists. 
  • Stevens scored 27 points off turnovers. 
  • Elmira outrebounded the Ducks, 43-36.
  • The Stevens bench added 32 points. 
  • The Ducks held the edge in points in the paint, 30-28.
  • Stevens committed a season-low seven turnovers.
  • Freshmen Vanessa Elliott and Amber Porrett each made their collegiate debut in tonight's contest. Elliott recorded a pair of rebounds and assists, while adding a block and a steal. Porrett tallied five points, one rebound and one assist.
