HOBOKEN, N.J. (October 12, 2019) – Four different players found the back of the net as the Stevens Institute of Technology men's soccer team defeated Wilkes University 4-0 Saturday evening in a MAC Freedom fixture at the DeBaun Athletic Complex.
Sophomore
Sean Masur joined juniors
Stephen Johnson and
Kevin Brito in scoring over a 16-minute stretch in the first half as the Ducks built a 3-0 lead at the intermission. Sophomore
Mason Boenning collected his first collegiate goal in the 87th minute as the Ducks totaled four goals for the first time this season. The victory snapped the Ducks' winless skid at five and moved Stevens to 7-3-2 on the year and 1-0-1 in conference play. The victory was the first MAC Freedom victory for the program.
Russell Rauh and Nick Kinzler combined for six saves for the Colonels, who dropped to 6-4-2 and 1-1 in league matches. Stevens' victory snapped Wilkes' two-match winning streak.
Playing at the DeBaun Athletic Complex for the first time in 31 days, Stevens jumped on the board in the 13th minute, courtesy of a heady play by Masur. Freshman
Bruno Andino began the play with a free kick along the near sideline. Junior
Jacob Curtis headed the service back across the six-yard box. Masur headed the ball on goal, but Rauh rejected the scoring attempts with both hands, pushing the ball back into play, however, Masur arched his back and headed the ball forward for his second marker of the year, matching his goal total from his freshman campaign.
Andino was able to find the scoresheet in the 24th minute. The North Brunswick, New Jersey native played a ball into the box. Junior
Cristiano Hocken got a foot on the pass, directing it towards Johnson, who sent the ball into the net for his second of the year.
The two early goals would provide the Ducks, who held Wilkes to a season-low six shots. Junior
Aedan Boriotti made one save in posting his fifth clean sheet of the season.
Boenning buried an Andino feed to cap the scoring.
Turning Point
- Playing with a two-goal lead, Brito's first goal of the season provided the home team with an insurmountable lead.
- Brito appeared to send a crossing ball towards the net in the 29th minute.
- Rauh left his line and jumped to collect the pass, however, the Wilkes goalkeeper mistimed his jump and never properly corralled the ball and the ball trickled into the net for Brito's first tally of the year.
- Wilkes would change goalkeepers four minutes later.
Inside the Numbers
- Stevens outshot Wilkes, 23-6. The Ducks fired off 12 attempts in the first half and 11 in the second. Brito came off the bench to take a match-high five attempts.
- The Ducks had a 10-1 advantage in shots on net. The Colonels' lone scoring attempt came in the 85th minute.
- A balanced attack saw the home team earned five corners in the first half and four in the second, en route to a 9-3 margin for the match.
- Andino's two assists earned the freshman midfielder the first multi-point performance of his collegiate career.
- A physical affair, the teams combined for 30 fouls and eight yellow cards.
- It was the first meeting between the program since Oct. 3, 2012.
Unsung Hero
- The defensive unit of Curtis, sophomores Gianni Falvo and Matthew Pinho, freshman Fritz Kabeisman did not let Wilkes come forward, holding the guests to just one shot over the first 40 minutes.
From the Sidelines (Head Coach Dale Jordan)
- "Great to be back on DeBaun!!!"
- "[I] was impressed at our attacking display in the first half. Second half, we had to work a little bit harder to create chances. Credit to Wilkes for their work rate."
