Men’s Soccer Tops FDU-Florham 3-0 for Second Straight Win

Three different players find the back of the net for the Ducks, who won their second straight.

HOBOKEN, N.J. (October 16, 2019)  – Two goals over a 2:19 stretch in the second half proved to be the difference as the Stevens Institute of Technology men's soccer team downed Fairleigh Dickinson University Florham-Campus 3-0 Wednesday in a MAC Freedom fixture played at a rain-soaked DeBaun Athletic Complex.

Junior Stephen Johnson began the key sequence in the 53rd minute, heading home a rebound for his second goal in as many matches. Freshman Fritz Kabeiseman started the play, heading classmate Bruno Andino's corner kick towards the goal, but FDU's Tiernan Grey deflected the try towards Johnson and the Oceanport, New Jersey native deftly directed the ball across the line for his third goal of the year. Kabeiseman was awarded an assist on the play for his first collegiate point.

Junior Cristiano Hocken netted his team-leading fifth goal 139 seconds later, capping a brilliant run through the heart of the FDU defense with a strike from just outside the 18-yard box that beat Grey. The marker came before the arrival of heavy rain and wind, whose expected arrival prompted a change to the original start time of the match and proved to be troublesome for both sides over the match's final 15 minutes.

Junior Aedan Boriotti made two saves in posting his sixth clean sheet of the season. The Sea Girt, New Jersey native has partnered with a staunch defensive unit to not allow a goal over Stevens' last 290 minutes. In the process, Boriotti lowered his goals-against average to a MAC Freedom-leading 0.800.

Junior Jacob Curtis also found the back of the net for the Ducks, who won their second straight  to improve to 8-3-2 overall and 2-0-1 in the conference. Grey battled the elements to make nine saves for FDU, who fell to 5-6-2 on the season and to 0-2-1 in league play. The Devils are winless over their last five matches.

Turning Point
  • After a possession battle throughout much of the first half, Curtis opened scoring in the 35th minute.
  • Hocken directed a free kick into the six-yard box and the Little Silver, New Jersey native rose above the crowd to head the ball into the goal.
  • It was Curtis' third marker of the season, all of which have been scored via a header.

Inside the Numbers
  • Stevens outshot FDU, 26-12, including a 12-2 margin in shots on net. The margin was especially advantageous in the second half as the Ducks compiled a 17-5 margin.
  • Every Duck starter fired off at least one attempt and sophomore Bailey Gano came off the bench to lead the team with four.
  • Hocken added an assist on Curtis' goal to finish with his third multi-point performance of the season.

Unsung Hero
  • The defensive group held the highest-scoring offense in the MAC Freedom to just eight shots on the day, and just a single shot on net from FDU's Brandon McGregor and Salvatore Vassallo, who entered the match as the two leading scorers in the conference.

From the Sidelines (Head Coach Dale Jordan)

  • "Happy with the defense and another clean sheet."
  • "Massive game on Saturday against last year's MAC finalist, Kings, on the road, to look forward to."
