Women’s Volleyball Closes Midwest Road Trip with 3-1 Loss to No. 16 Augsburg

Chu Registers Third Straight Match with at Least 20 digs

MINNEAPOLIS, MINN. (October 12, 2019) – The Stevens Institute of Technology women's volleyball team got 20 digs from sophomore Elizabeth Chu and a career-high 18 digs from sophomore Corinne Dougherty as the Ducks fell 3-1 against 16th-ranked Augsburg Saturday at SI Melby Hall.

Playing in their seventh match of the season against either a ranked team or a team receiving votes in the American Volleyball Coaches Association poll, Stevens won the third set in dominant fashion, but could not pull out another set as they dropped to 9-11 overall this season.

The Auggies, led by a game-high 16 kills from Kayla Gjerde, improved their record to 16-4 on the year with a 25-16, 25-18, 11-25, 25-16 win.

Offensively, senior Casey King had a team-high nine kills in the loss while senior Shelby Stewart added eight to go along with a game-high five blocks while hitting .316.

Volleys and Points
  • Tied at six in the opening set, the Auggies rattled off seven consecutive points to open up an early lead.
  • Augsburg was able to keep Stevens at arms-length for the remainder of the set, not allowing the Ducks to cut the deficit below five as they grabbed the set 25-16.
  • Much like in the first set, Augsburg created early separation with a quick run, this time scoring five straight points to produce a 12-7 lead.
  • The Ducks did not go away quietly making the score 14-12 with a 5-2 run.
  • The Auggies answered immediately, however, with an 8-2 flurry to ultimately put the game out of reach and cruise to a 25-18 victory.
  • Set number three saw Stevens come out of the gates firing, winning 12 of the first 15 points of the stanza to take an early nine-point lead.
  • After Augsburg cut the lead to seven at 14-7, the Ducks put to set away with a 7-2 run and also won four of the final five points of the set.
  • In the fourth and final set, Augsburg was the one who came out hot, opening the set on a 6-1 run.
  • Stevens climbed back into the contest and made the score 10-9 with a 4-0 run.
  • The Auggies were not to be denied in the fourth set, though, answering the call by winning six consecutive points and pushing the lead to 17-10.
  • The Ducks were able to stave off three separate match points in the set, but nothing more as Jade Fullerton registered a kill to give Augsburg the 3-1 win.
Match Point
  • Fullerton was able to rise up and put down her eighth kill of the contest off an assist from Lexie Lang to seal the victory.
Inside the Numbers
  • The Auggies out-hit the Ducks .185 to .122 overall in the match as Stevens was able to hold a .250 to -.077 edge in the third set victory.
  • The two teams were nearly even in a lot of statistical categories as both teams had seven blocks and Augsburg held a narrow 6-5 advantage in service aces.
  • Stevens has won at least one set in six of the seven contests the Ducks have played against teams who received votes or were ranked in the AVCA top-25 poll.
  • Junior setter Kathleen Riegner produced 31 assists and six digs in the match.
  • With her 20-dig performance in the loss, Chu has now produced at least 20 digs 19 times in her career.
Chasing History
  • After hitting .263 in the match, Sara Hain now has a season attack percentage of .370, just .011 behind her own school record of .381 set in 2016. Her career attack percentage of .338 would also be a school record, shattering the previous record of .284 set by Chrissy Dickinson from 2010-11.
  • Stewart added five more blocks to her career tally to 437 which ranks first in all of NCAA Division III and 14th across all NCAA divisions among active players.
Up Next
  • The Ducks will travel to Madison, N.J., to take on FDU-Florham Wednesday at 7:00 p.m.
  • Stevens has won the last four matchups between the two teams, including a 3-0 sweep of the Devils in their last meeting on October 14, 2016.
