Hocken Scores Twice as Men’s Soccer Tops King’s, 2-1

Junior nets third multi-goal match of the season as men's soccer wins third straight.

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. (October 19, 2019)  – Junior Cristiano Hocken scored a pair of goals to provide all the offense the Stevens Institute of Technology men's soccer team needed in a 2-1 victory over King's College Saturday evening in MAC Freedom fixture at McCarthy Stadium.

Hocken scored in the 11th and 18th minutes to record his third multi-goal performance of the season for the Ducks, who won their third straight to improve to 9-3-2 on the year and 3-0-1 in conference play. The New Providence, New Jersey one-timed a cross to tie the match at one and then beat his defender to a deflected ball and sent a strong shot into the lower right corner of the goal to put Stevens on top. The two-goal performance pushed Hocken's point total to a team and MAC Freedom-leading 17.

Aidan Oyler scored in the second minute for King's, who snapped a three-match winning streak in falling to 11-4 on the year and 2-2 in the MAC Freedom. Oyler's marker was the first allowed by the Ducks in conference play and just the 12th allowed by Stevens on the year. The Ducks lead the MAC Freedom with an opponent scoring average of just 0.86 goals per match.

Junior Aedan Boriotti made four saves to earn the victory, while Connor McKeown made one save for King's. McKeown had allowed just two goals over his previous five matches, totaling 412:16. Two of Boriotti's four saves came between Hocken's markers.

Turning Point
  • Boriotti punched away a pair of King's tries off set pieces in the 51st and 60th minutes. The Sea Girt, New Jersey native denied August Axtman after a free kick and then denied Axtman nine minutes later following a corner kick.
  • The two scoring attempts were the final Monarch tries that registered on frame.

Inside the Numbers
  • Each team took exactly eight shots. King's held the edge in shots on net, 8-5.
  • King's out-earned Stevens in corner kicks, 4-3, with each of the Monarchs' four corners taking place in the second half.
  • Sophomore Bailey Gano directed the cross that led to Hocken's first goal of the evening. The assist was the first of Gano's collegiate career.
  • It was the first meeting between the programs.

Unsung Heroes
  • The defensive corps of sophomores Matthew Pinho and Gianni Falvo, along with freshman Fritz Kabeisman and junior Jacob Curtis held the highest-scoring offense in the conference to just one goal and kept Axtman, the MAC Freedom's leading goal scorer, off the scoresheet.

From the Sidelines (Head Coach Dale Jordan)
  • "Incredible result on the road against a very tough and organized King's team. We had a poor start, but we rebounded well. Our attacks in the first half were very clinical [and in the] second half, we had to dig deep and defend hard to keep the result. Have to recover and get ready for another MAC battle on Tuesday at home."
