Men’s Fencing Finishes Unbeaten at Vassar Invitational for Second Straight Season

Wolfe Crouse Wins 13 Bouts to Lead the Way Individually

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. (November 10, 2019) – The Stevens Institute of Technology men's fencing team continued their strong start to the 2019 season with a perfect 8-0 record in the Vassar Invitational Sunday.

Sophomore Wolfe Crouse led the way for the Ducks with 13 individual victories while seven other fencers won at least 10 bouts on the day as Stevens has now gone undefeated in the Vassar Invite in back-to-back seasons.

The Ducks defeated Vassar College, Haverford College, Hunter College, University of the Incarnate Word, Sacred Heart University, Drew University, Denison University and Yeshiva University on the day.

In total, Stevens posted a 52-20 record at epee, a 41-31 record at foil and a 57-15 record at sabre in the meet.

Along with Crouse, the Ducks got double-digit victories in the meet from Andy Faubert (11), Zhonghan Pan (11), Logan Rechler (11), Juan Amezquita (12), Pablo Amezquita (11), Matthew Jacobson (11) and Dylan Woodward (10).

Hunter College (Win 25-2)
  • The largest win of the day for the Ducks came in the first bout as Pan went a perfect 3-0, Faubert and sophomore Tom Gana produced two victories and Crouse and sophomore Gabe Toltus each added one for a perfect 9-0 record at epee.
  • At foil, Rechler and senior Justin Yu picked up two wins while Nick Beja, Ethan Grzeda and Ean Weiss each had one.
  • Stevens was also unbeaten at sabre as Woodward, Pablo Amezquita and sophomore Vaughn Rice each went 3-0.
Drew University (Win 17-10)
  • Crouse began a streak of four straight duals without dropping a bout against Drew and four other Ducks added wins for a 8-1 victory at epee.
  • Stevens took a narrow 4-5 loss at foil as sophomore Noah Ehrlich, Grzeda, Rechler and Weiss all had individual victories.
  • Juan Amezquita and Rice picked up two wins apiece and Woodward added another to give the Ducks a 5-4 win at sabre.
Vassar College (Win 15-12)
  • The bout against the host school was the closest of the meet for the Ducks as Crouse went a perfect 3-0 and Faubert and Pan added two each for a 7-2 win at epee.
  • Rechler went unbeaten at foil for Stevens while Ehrlich and Grzeda produced one each in a close 5-4 win.
  • The Ducks dropped the sabre matchup 3-6, but Juan Amezquita produced a pair of victories in the loss and Rice added another.
University of the Incarnate Word (Win 16-11)
  • Crouse won three, Faubert grabbed two and Toltus produced one win at epee for a 6-3 win.
  • Rechler won the only bout of the match against UIW at foil for the Ducks in a 1-8 defeat.
  • The Ducks were able to make up for the loss at sabre, however, going 9-0 with three wins apiece from Juan Amezquita, Jacobson and Woodward.
Haverford University (Win 18-9)
  • The Ducks were led once again at epee by Crouse who went 3-0 with Faubert and Pan adding two and Gana picking up one victory for an 8-1 win.
  • Stevens went 6-3 at foil against the Fords with three victories from Beja, two wins from Rechler and one by Ehrlich.
  • Woodward won two bouts while Rice and Juan Amezquita won one apiece as the Ducks narrowly fell 4-5 at sabre.
Sacred Heart University (Win 19-8)
  • Faubert and Pan won two bouts each and Gana and Toltus each had won victory to give Stevens a 6-3 win at epee.
  • The Ducks were narrowly defeated 4-5 at foil despite a pair of wins from both Beja and Rechler.
  • Stevens got three victories from Juan Amezquita, two wins each from Pablo Amezquita and Jacobson and single victories by Rice and Woodward for a perfect 9-0 effort at sabre.
Yeshiva University (Win 21-6)
  • Gana, Toltus and freshman James Morris all picked up one win each as epee fell 3-6 against Yeshiva.
  • Despite the loss at epee, Stevens was still able to pull out the overall win thanks to 9-0 victories at both foil and sabre, led by three wins each from Weiss, Yu, Pablo Amezquita, Jacobson and sophomore Chris Kurtz.
Denison University (Win 19-8)
  • Freshmen Jack Corridon and Andrew Bauman posted their first collegiate victories at epee to lead the Ducks to a 5-4 win.
  • Stevens also won by a narrow 5-4 margin at foil with single wins by Grzeda, Weiss and Yu and two victories from sophomore Ryan McLaughlin.
  • The sabre squad posted their fifth 9-0 win of the meet against Denison as Jacobson and Pablo Amezquita leading the way with three wins each.
