Women’s Basketball Drops 98-77 Contest Against NYU

Jess Broad Scores 18 and Pulls Down Eight Rebounds in the Loss

NEW YORK CITY – Led by 18 points and eight rebounds from sophomore Jess Broad, the Stevens Institute of Technology women's basketball team fell 98-77 against New York University Sunday in the final contest of the NYU Tip-Off Classic.

Trailing by just six points at halftime, the Royals outscored Stevens 30-18 in the third quarter to extend the lead and were able to grab the win to keep their perfect 4-0 record intact.

NYU received a 33-point, 10-rebound double-double from Janean Cuffee as well as 22 points off the bench by Brooklyn Shelton in the victory.

Along with Broad, sophomore Christina Li and freshman Danielle Cornetta also scored in double figures with 14 and 12 points, respectively.

The Royals were able to do a ton of damage on the glass, holding a 53-30 advantage in rebounds while pulling down 28 offensive boards.

Stevens was able to out-shoot NYU from downtown in the loss, shooting 52.4 percent from 3-point-range while holding the Royals to 36.7 percent from beyond the arc.

Turning Point
  • Leading 43-37 at the break, Cuffee was able to single-handedly create separation with 10 straight points coming out of halftime in a what was a 12-3 run to extend the lead to 55-40.
  • The Ducks were unable to bring the deficit back within single digits for the remainder of the contest as they dropped their seventh contest in the last eight games against NYU.
Inside the Numbers
  • Along with holding a large edge in rebounds, the Royals also took home a 30-8 advantage in second chance points.
  • Tied at 12 in the first quarter, NYU went on a 13-0 run to end the first and start the second quarter to lead 25-12.
  • Stevens responded with a 10-0 run of their own, highlighted by back-to-back 3-pointers from Cornetta, to bring the score within three.
  • Leading 36-34, the Royals rattled off seven straight points to close the quarter and create some breathing room.
  • NYU was able to keep the Ducks at arms-length the rest of the way following the 12-3 run out of the break.
  • The 11 made 3-pointers in the loss are the most for Stevens in a single game since draining 12 buckets from beyond the arc against Houghton on Feb. 11, 2017.
  • Emily Nunez contributed three of the 11 made 3-pointers in the contest while Li added four of her own.
  • Annetta Panayides produced eight points to go along with seven boards in the loss.
Unsung Hero
  • Panayides went 3 for 4 from the floor and 2 for 2 from the free throw line while finishing second on the team in rebounds.

  • "Our focus right now is to improve and get better with each game. We played more physical, focused on contact in our rebounds and knocking down shots. I was proud of our focus as we grow. NYU was the better team tonight."
Next Up
  • The Ducks travel to Los Angeles, California, to take on Occidental College Saturday at 7:00 p.m.
