Vanessa Elliott produced career-highs in both points and rebounds for her first career double-double and sophomore
Jess Broad added 16 points and seven boards to lead the Stevens Institute of Technology women's basketball team to a 61-53 victory over Occidental College Saturday at Rush Gymnasium.
Stevens pulled down 61 total rebounds as a team in the victory, the most in the for the Ducks in a single game since they grabbed 66 boards on Dec. 2, 2013 in a contest against Kean.
The Tigers were led offensively by Taylor Yoshida who registered a game-high 18 points while Mallory North contributed 12 rebounds as Occidental fell to 1-2 on the season.
The Ducks outscored Occidental 22-12 in the first quarter and 21-9 in the third and held the Tigers to just 23 percent from the floor to improve to 2-2 overall.
With the score tied at four, Stevens went on a quick 9-0 run highlighted by back-to-back 3-pointers from Elliott and were able to keep the Tigers at arms-length for the remainder of the opening period.
Occidental responded, however, with a 18-3 run in the second quarter to grab what was their largest lead of the contest at five points and led 32-29 heading into the break.
In a game fueled by runs, the Ducks came out of the locker room with one of their own as they rattled off 11 straight points, five of which came from junior
Christina Li, to take a 40-34 edge.
Stevens then closed the quarter on a 10-2 flurry capped off by a made jumper from Broad to head to the fourth leading 50-41.
The Ducks had an answer for every bucket from the Tigers down the stretch and grabbed the eight-point victory.
Turning Point
- After Stevens re-took the lead in the third quarter at 40-34, the Tigers were able to cut the deficit to one after Yoshida completed an and-one with 3:26 left to play in the third.
- The Ducks were able to counter with a 10-2 run thanks to four points from Broad and two apiece from Allie Moss, Amber Porrett and Elliott.
Inside the Numbers
- Stevens out-rebounded Occidental 61-48 in the victory, led by 10 from Elliott, nine from Moss and seven each from Broad and Meghan Douglas.
- Nine of the 10 Ducks who played in the contest registered at least two points.
- Led by the 10 points from Elliott and five apiece from Anetta Panayides and Emily Nunez, Stevens produced 23 bench points compared to just 13 from the Tigers.
- The Ducks were also fantastic under the basket, outscoring Occidental 36-20 in points in the paint.
- Panayides scored all five of her points in the fourth quarter and had five rebounds.
Unsung Hero
- Moss was all over the court in the victory, racking up six points and five assists to go along with those nine boards.

- Stevens concludes their California trip with a contest against Pomona Pitzer Sunday at 5:00 p.m. in Claremont, Calif.
- It is believed to be the first matchup between the two schools in history.
