Women’s Basketball Falls to Pomona Pitzer to Close out California Trip

Broad Scores Season-High 21 Points

CLAREMONT, Calif. (November 24, 2019) – Led by a season-high 21 points from Jess Broad, the Stevens Institute of Technology women's basketball team fell 66-61 against Pomona Pitzer College Sunday at Voelkel Gymnasium.

The Ducks led by as many as 11 points in the third quarter but were outscored 31-15 to close out the contest as they fell to 2-3 on the young season.

The Sagehens, meanwhile, got 22 points and seven boards from Carly Leong and a 10-point, 10-rebound double-double by Amara Chidom as they picked up their first win on the year.

Trailing by six points at the break, Stevens started the second half with a 21-4 run highlighted by eight points each by Broad and Annetta Panayides and capped by a 3-pointer from Allie Moss to take a 46-35 edge with 4:44 left in the third quarter.

The two teams traded buckets for nearly the entirety of the first half, Pomona Pitzer scored the final five points of the second quarter to take a 31-25 edge into the break.

After grabbing an 11-point lead in the third, the Saghens closed the third quarter on a 12-2 run to cut the deficit to one just before the end of the quarter.

Pomona then opened the final stanza by scoring 10 of the first 12 points to take a 57-50 lead.

The Ducks were able to respond with seven straight points to knot the contest at 57 but could not re-take the lead as the Foghens rattled off seven consecutive points of their own to take the lead.

Broad was able to answer for the Ducks with a 4-0 flurry by herself to make the score 64-61 with 43 seconds to play.

Stevens could not get any closer, however, as Pomona Pitzer grabbed the narrow five-point win with a pair of free throws down the stretch.

Turning Point
  • The contest was defined by a pair of long runs for both teams as the Ducks grabbed their largest lead of the game with a 21-4 run.
  • The Foghens countered with a 22-4 run of their own, however, to close the third and begin the fourth and re-take the lead.
  • After the run for Pomona, Stevens was unable to gain the lead in the contest.
