David Lehman registered a season-high 20 kills and sophomore
Ryan Byrne added a double-double with 12 kills and 10 digs as the No. 2 Stevens Institute of Technology men's volleyball team defeated New York University in four sets (25-19, 16-25, 28-26, 30-28) Wednesday evening at Canavan Arena.
Sophomore
Jack Bittker tallied a career-best 16 kills while senior
Jacob Patterson dished out a season-high 44 assists for the Ducks, who improved to 9-1 on the year.Â
NYU was led by Evan Lindley with 16 kills along with Alex Li and Neil Ferraro who each recorded 13 kills. The Violets fell to 5-5 this season.Â
Volleys and Points
- NYU committed an attack error to give the Ducks the first point of the match.Â
- Lindley issued a kill to put the Violets on the board.Â
- Stevens took a 7-5 lead after back-to-back kills from Bittker and Byrne.Â
- The Violets brought themselves back within one point after a kill by Lindley and a Ducks attack error.
- The Ducks went on a 5-0 run that included three straight blocks, forcing NYU to take a timeout.Â
- Lindley came out of the timeout to set down a pass from Matin Bikdeli.
- NYU shortened the lead to five after kills from Tyler Flood and Li.
- After a service error by the Violets, the teams traded the next seven points (all scored on kills) before a service error by Stevens made the score 23-19.
- Two errors by NYU gave the Ducks the first win of the match.Â
- A block by Bikdeli and Ferraro gave NYU the first point of the second set.Â
- Two errors by the Violets but Stevens up by one.

- Stevens took a 13-10 lead after three errors by NYU and kills from Byrne and Bittker.Â
- The Violets fought back and saw one kill each from Li, Ferraro and Adam Li followed by a service ace by Stevens to take a one-point lead.Â
- The teams traded one-point leads before NYU earned a 21-19 edge after three straight Stevens errors.Â
- Again, the teams traded points to keep the set tied, but ultimately the Ducks scored three straight after two errors by NYU and an ace from Byrne.
- Back-to-back kills from Lehman opened up the fourth set.Â
- Stevens took a 7-2 lead after a Ferraro service error and one a kill apiece from Bittker and Byrne.
- NYU cut the lead to two after kills from Lindley and Flood and an ace by Li.Â
- The Ducks kept working to distance themselves, but the Violets tied the set at 23 after kills from Flood and Lindley and error by Stevens.Â
- Bittker gave the Ducks a one point lead after delivering a kill, but was answered with a kill and an attack error to put NYU up 26-25.
- Bittker then issued another kill followed by one from Lehman to give Stevens the one point advantage.Â
- An attack error by Byrne was followed by a kill from Lehman and then a kill from Ferraro to tie the set at 28.
- Lehman set down a Patterson pass to put the Ducks up by one.
Match Point
- Frenzel and Patterson stopped an attempt by Li to end the match.Â
Inside the Numbers
- Senior Joshua Hinton tallied a career-high 11 digs.
- Byrne led the Ducks with two aces. The Mastic, N.Y. native also added 10 digs.Â
- The Violets outhit Stevens .500 to .095 in the second set.Â
- The Ducks totaled season-bests of 55 kills, 51 assists and 17 blocks.Â
- NYU held the edge in kills (58-55), assists (54-51) and aces (4-3).
- Bikdeli registered a match-high 49 assists.
- Stevens delivered 23 kills in the final set to record a .439 hitting percentage.
Unsung Hero
- Frenzel was a force on the net, tallying a career-best five blocks. The Rossmoor, California native also added five kills on the night to end with a team-best .444 hitting percentage.

- "Stevens vs. NYU is always an exciting match and tonight was the most fun we have had this season," stated assistant men's volleyball coach Austin Voges. "Both teams got better as the match went on. We are very proud of the effort our team put in tonight and I think that gave us the slight edge. Not only did Ryan, jack and Dave play well, they played hard and smart when they needed."
