Box Score BETHLEHEM, PA. (February 16, 2019) – The Stevens Institute of Technology men's tennis team battled but dropped their season opener to Division I Lehigh University 7-0 at the Lewis Indoor Tennis Center. The Ducks were close to winning a few flights but came up short in the third set each time. The men's tennis teams drop to 0-1 and Lehigh moves their season record to 1-2.
Sophomore
Mark Kanevsky and sophomore
Gabriel Sifuentes fell 6-1 in the second doubles flight. Sophomore
Arjun Krishnan and freshman
Mark-Jonathan Pabalan were bested by Bryant Born and Andrew Nakhjavan in the No. 3 doubles flight 6-2. Nationally ranked sophomore
Bryan Szayna and freshman
Marc Feliu Gomez were in a very competitive match in the No. 1 doubles flight. The duo gave it everything they had and took Harry Wang and Zack Elliot of Lehigh to tiebreaker. In the tiebreaker Szayna and Gomez fell 7-5 to the Mountain Hawk duo putting the host school up 3-0 heading into the single flights.
The Ducks put forth a valiant effort in the single flights but were not able to seize the momentum from the Mountain Hawks.
Gabriel Sifuentes was poised to get the first point on the board for the Ducks when he took on Andrew Nakhjavan in the No. 5 single flight. After dropping the first set 6-4, the Queens, N.Y. native came back to take the second set 6-4 pushing the match to a winner take all third set. Nakhjaven would prove to be too much and took the third set 10-1 to keep the Stevens men's team off the scoreboard. Gomez, Szayna, Kanevsky, Krishnan and Pabalan all dropped their respective flights in straight sets.
Up Next: The men's tennis team will be back in action February 23-24 at the Mary Washington Invitational down in Fredericksburg, Va.
