Women's Basketball Falls Short to Hartwick on Senior Day

Anna Toke registered a double-double on senior day with 12 points and 12 rebounds.

HOBOKEN, N.J. (February 16, 2019)  – Sophomore Maddi Hahn tied her career-high of 19 points, but the Stevens Institute of Technology women's basketball team was edged by Hartwick 71-64 in their Empire 8 Conference regular season finale Saturday evening at Canavan Arena.

Graduate student Anna Toke registered her ninth double-double of the season with 12 points and 12 rebounds. The Ducks ended the regular season with an overall record of 17-8 and a conference record of 12-4.

Carly Johnson led Hartwick with a game-high of 24 points while Kelly Pine added a double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds. The Hawks improved to 20-4 on the year 14-2 in the E8. Hartwick will close out conference play on Monday, Feb. 18 after traveling to The Sage Colleges.

Hartwick opened the first quarter holding onto a short lead before freshman Jess Broad stole a pass and made a fastbreak layup to put Stevens up by one. The Hawks then went on a 10-0 run to give themselves a nine-point lead. Toke hit a jumper before sophomore Lily Taeuber knocked down a three to shorten the lead to four heading into the second quarter.

The Hawks controlled the beginning of the second quarter after outscoring Stevens 8-2 in the first five minutes. A Taeuber layup and two good free throws from Toke decreased the deficit to six, but two three-pointers from Johnson down the stretch gave Hartwick an 11-point lead at the half.

Hahn came out strong in the second half, scoring 10 of her 19 points in the third quarter. The Ducks were able to bring themselves within five points after freshman Allie Moss hit a big-time three. Hartwick's Mary Schoenherr scored the next four points in attempt to distance the Hawks, but another Moss three-pointer kept Stevens alive. With 27 seconds left in the third quarter, sophomore Christina Li made a shot from downtown to give the Ducks a spark heading into the final quarter.

The teams traded buckets for the majority of the fourth quarter, but Stevens was able to keep chipping away at their deficit and come within two points after Toke dished the ball to sophomore Sam Winter for a good layup. The Hawks knocked down a few baskets but a layup by Hahn followed by a made free throw from Toke brought Stevens within one point with 2:11 left in the game.

Caitlin Corbett made a crafty move in the paint for an open layup to give Hartwick a three-point advantage. In the final 15 seconds, Pine was fouled twice and made all four of her attempted foul shots to help the Hawks walk away with the victory.

Prior to the game, Toke was recognized for her career accomplishments and contributions to the Stevens women's basketball program. The Ducks also recognized Hartwick's two seniors, Johnson and Corbett, before the ceremony honoring Toke.
