WAYNE, N.J. (February 23, 2019) – Freshmen
Tom James and
Brett Mendez each registered their first collegiate RBI, but four multi-run innings from William Paterson University allowed them to top the Stevens Institute of Technology baseball team 10-2 Saturday afternoon at Jeff Albies Field.
Sophomore
J.C. Hanley added an RBI for the Ducks and freshman
Chris Silos recorded a double for his first collegiate hit as Stevens fell to 1-3 at the end of their first week of the 2019 season.
Carson Weis led William Paterson with three RBI while Danny Carter, Dan Abate and Greg Cuevas each batted in two runs. The Pioneers open their 2019 campaign 1-0.
Senior
Danny Poidomani (0-1) pitched the first four innings for Stevens and struck out six batters. Chris Babb (1-0) led William Paterson on the mound with seven strikeouts across five innings, allowing just one run.
"Our offensive approach was better today as we had some solid offensive outputs, especially from first year
Chris Silos, who collected his first colegiate hits and also
J.C. Hanley," offered head coach Kristaps Aldins. "We are having some early season growing pains, which is certainly frustrating, but our coaching staff knows that better days are coming for this group as long as we continue to stick together."
Carter and Weis led the Pioneers in the first and third innings, where they each registered two RBI across the two innings to give William Paterson a 4-0 lead.
The Ducks scored their first run of the game in the top of the fifth. With the bases loaded, Hanley singled up the middle to bring in junior
A.J. Falconite. Senior
Donny Gherardi sprinted from second to home in hopes to give Stevens another point, but the Oradell, New Jersey native was unable to touch the plate in time.
William Paterson answered in the bottom of the fifth with four runs after both Abate and Cuevas tallied two RBI. The Pioneers added two more runs in the bottom of the sixth to cap off their scoring.
Freshman
Ben Lesher singled to right field in the top of the eighth to register his first collegiate hit. After senior
Matt Branco and junior
Eric Zickert both walked, James flied out to center field to bring in Lesher. Silos followed with a single to advance Branco and Zickert. Mendez then reached base on a fielder's choice, allowing Zickert to score Stevens' third run of the game.
On the defensive side, Hanley and junior
Patrick Rood led the Ducks with five putouts apiece. Steve Yelin registered a game-high 10 putouts for William Paterson.
