HOBOKEN, N.J. (February 24, 2019) – Freshmen
Chris Silos and
Tom James each recorded their first collegiate run, but the Stevens Institute of Technology baseball team fell to Rowan University 25-3 Sunday afternoon in a non-conference matchup at Dobbelaar Field.
Junior
A.J. Falconite batted in two runs while sophomore
Gannon Kenney-McGowan registered his first RBI of the season as the Ducks fell to 1-4 on the year.
Mitch Walker, Eric Schorr and Steven Hewa each hit a homerun while Walker and Dillon Mendel collected four RBI to lead the Profs to their season-opening victory.
Danny Serreino (1-0) and Andrew DiPiazza each struck out five batters with no hits or runs across 3.2 and 2.0 innings pitched, respectively.
Rowan took an early lead in the top of the first inning. On
Chandler Brierley's (0-1) second pitch, Dan Shane hit the ball down the left field line for a triple before Mendel singled to bring in his teammate. After two more runs scored following an error, Hewa hit a three-run homerun to give the Profs a 6-0 lead at the end of the inning.
Rowan saw five more multi-run innings on their way to defeating the Ducks.
"I am proud of our team for continuing to play hard despite a less than desirable outcome today," commented head baseball coach
Kristaps Aldins. "A lot of our student-athletes, especially the first years, got great opportunities to compete against a formidable Rowan squad who took it to us from the opening pitch to the very last one."
"With that being said, my most important takeaway from today's game, as the leader of this team, is that our Stevens student-athletes respect the game and are wired to play hard and play the game the right way regardless of the score," continued Aldins. "And that is a very important takeaway from what was a humbling loss."
The Ducks scored their first run in bottom of the fifth after James and Silos each registered a single and before advancing one base each on a ground out by freshman
Ben Lesher. Falconite then hit a single to bring in the two freshman and give Stevens their first points of the game.
With the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth, Kenney-McGowan worked a walk to bring in junior
Eric Zickert, giving the Ducks their final run of the day.
Lesher led Stevens with seven putouts while Silos added four, including a catch right at the fence in center field that prevented a two-run homerun for the Profs.
