No. 2 Men's Volleyball Tops Nazareth in Four Sets

David Lehman led the Ducks with a match-high 13 kills.

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (February 23, 2019)  – Junior David Lehman issued a match-high 13 kills as the No. 2 Stevens Institute of Technology men's volleyball team defeated Nazareth College 3-1 (26-28, 25-20, 25-13, 25-13) in Saturday afternoon's United Volleyball Conference matchup at Kidera Gymnasium. 

Senior Dylan DeBoer and sophomore Ryan Byrne added 10 kills apiece for the Ducks, who improved to 12-1 on the year and 3-0 in UVC play. 

The Golden Flyers were led by Antonio Sargent with 11 kills, as Nazareth fell to 8-7 overall and 1-2 in the conference. 

Volleys and Points
  • The Ducks took a 7-5 lead to start the match after junior Jonathan Frenzel issued two kills and sophomore Jack Bittker along with DeBoer and senior Cooper Diamond each set down a pass. 
  • Nazareth tied the set at eight with a kil from Joe Crosby. 
  • The teams traded points before the Golden Flyers took a 19-16 lead after two errors by the Ducks and kills from Crosby and Sargent. 
  • Stevens took a 21-20 lead following two errors by Nazareth and freshman Jack Fyda delivering an ace and a kill.
  • The Golden Flyers took back the lead when Zachary Gillard set down a pass from Tyler Farnung.
  • A kill from Bittker and an error by Naz allowed Stevens to take the 26-25 lead.
  • Kills from Crosby and Sean Dillon, followed by a Ducks' attack error allowed Nazareth to take hold of the first set. 
  • The Golden Flyers jumped on an early 7-4 lead to begin the second set. 
  • Stevens wasn't able to secure a lead until DeBoer and Lehman each registered a kill and DeBoer blocked an attempt by Sargent, putting the Ducks up 14-12. 
  • Another DeBoer block and an ace from Diamond gave Stevens a four-point lead. 
  • Nazareth brought themselves within one point when Dillon delivered a kill before registering a block with Gillard. 
  • Byrne set down a pass from senior Jacob Patterson, followed by an attack error by Naz and a block by Diamond and Lehman to give the Ducks a 23-19 lead. 
  • Lehman blocked an attempt by Ethan Ross to give Stevens the final point of the set. 
  • The Ducks opened the third set with a 7-2 lead, capped off by an ace from Fyda. 
  • Nazareth shortened the lead to three following a kill from Farnung and an attack error by the Ducks.
  • Stevens then outscored the Golden Flyers 14-5, including four kills from Byrne, to end the third set. 
  • The teams traded points to start the final set before the Ducks took a 7-4 lead after a kill and an ace from DeBoer, along with a block by Frenzel and Patterson. 
  • A 5-0 run by Stevens gave them a 15-7 lead, thanks to three kills from Lehman. 
  • Sargent, Ross and Jordan Hildreth each issued a kill in an attempt to cut the deficit. 
  • Diamond set down a pass from Patterson before Naz committed an error to give Stevens the 24th point of the set. 

Match Point
  • Lehman set down a pass from senior Niko Lambert for the final point of the match.

Inside the Numbers
  • Nazareth outhit the Ducks .400 to .316 in the first set. 
  • Diamond and DeBoer each collected four blocks. 
  • Fyda delivered a match-high three aces. 
  • Patterson tallied a match-high 40 assists and a season-best seven digs. 
  • Diamond led the Ducks with a .600 hitting percentage. 
  • The Golden Flyers were unable to issue an ace on the night, while the Ducks totaled eight. 
  • Stevens registered a .667 hitting percentage in the fourth set.
