No. 2 Men’s Volleyball Wins 10th-Straight With Sweep Over St. John Fisher

Jonathan Frenzel recorded a perfect hitting percentage as the Ducks topped the Cardinals in three sets.

PITTSFORD, N.Y. (February 24, 2019)  – Junior Jonathan Frenzel registered a perfect 1.000 hitting percentage, issuing 10 kills on 10 swings, as the No. 2 Stevens Institute of Technology men's volleyball team swept St. John Fisher (25-15, 25-19, 25-19) in Sunday morning's United Volleyball Conference match at Manning & Napier Varsity Gym. 

Junior David Lehman and sophomore Jack Bittker each added 9 nine kills as the Ducks extended their winning streak to 10 for a 13-1 overall record and a perfect 4-0 in the UVC.

The Cardinals were led by Matt Broderick with a match-high 11 kills. St. John Fisher falls to 13-4 on the year and 2-1 in conference action.

Volleys and Points
  • Three attack errors by Fisher gave the Ducks an early lead in the first set. 
  • Andres Ramirez set down a pass from Paul Hackford to put the Cardinals on the board. 
  • A Fisher attack error followed by one kill apiece from senior Dylan DeBoer and Bittker along with an ace from freshman Jack Fyda gave Stevens a 16-8 lead. 
  • The Cardinals ended the run with a kill from Josh Bigford and an ace by Kevin Cahill.
  • Stevens scored four-straight after three errors by Fisher and an kill from senior Cooper Diamond
  • DeBoer set down a pass from senior Jacob Patterson to end the first set. 
  • After trading points, the Ducks took a 7-6 lead after three errors by the Cardinals to begin the second set. 
  • Fisher took a 10-8 lead after Josh Bigford delivered three kills in a row. 
  • A Fisher attack error followed by a kill from DeBoer tied the set at 10. 
  • Stevens went on a 6-0 run that consisted of two kills from both Bittker and Frenzel plus two errors by the Cardinals. 
  • Stevens committed an attack error before Broderick and Mike Strumpfler block an attempt by Bittker to bring Fisher within two. 
  • Two attack errors and a Lehman kill gave the Ducks a 21-16 lead. 
  • Bittker issued a kill to give Stevens the second-set victory. 
  • The Ducks started the final set with a 3-2 lead after kills from Diamond and sophomore Ryan Byrne before Frenzel and Byrne blocked a Fisher attempt. 
  • Two kills from Broderick and two aces by Hackford allowed the Cardinals to take an 8-6 lead. 
  • Frenzel and Bittker issued blocks while Bittker blocked an attempt to put Stevens back up. 
  • Back-to-back kills from Broderick and Strumpfler gave Fisher a one point advantage before Lehman set down a pass from junior Grant Burden to tie the set. 
  • The teams continued to trade points before the Ducks collected five unanswered points that consisted of three aces and a kill from Bittker and a block by Diamond and Lehman to put Stevens up 22-18.

Match Point
  • An attack error by the Cardinals gave Stevens the final point of the match. 

Inside the Numbers
  • Today's match marks the second time this season Frenzel has finished with a perfect hitting percentage. The Rossmoor, California native delivered seven kills on seven attempts in Stevens' 3-0 win over Baruch on Feb. 9th.
  • Bittker tallied match-highs of three aces and six digs. 
  • Lehman hit a season-best .615.
  • Hackford led all players with 33 assists. 
  • The Ducks outhit Fisher .487 to .209. 
  • Stevens registered a season-low six errors. 
  • Strumpfler led the Cardinals with a .571 hitting percentage.
