HOBOKEN, N.J. (February 18, 2019) – Sophomore
Thomas Paulich registered an RBI for the third-straight game, but the Stevens Institute of Technology baseball team fell to Salve Regina University 7-1 Friday evening at Dobbelaar Field.
Paulich reached on a fielder's choice, allowing junior
A.J. Falconite to score. Senior
Donny Gherardi tallied two hits while Paulich and junior
Patrick Rood recorded one for the Ducks, who fell to 1-2 this season.
Colton Eremian led Salve Regina with a homer, three RBI and one hit. The Seahawks saw eight players register a hit, with three collecting two or more in their season-opening victory.
Senior
Ryan Larsen (0-2) pitched the first two innings for Stevens and struck out four batters. However, Salve Regina was able to compile three runs across the opening two innings, including an RBI from both Michael DeFusco and Dylan Ketch.
Patrick Maybach (1-0) struck out 10 batters over six innings pitched. Will Ginsberg came in to pitch the final three innings for the Seahawks and registered seven strikeouts to seal the win.
"Overall tough day for the Ducks," commented head coach
Kristaps Aldins. "We had a few very nice performances out of the bullpen, especially from
Hunter Counton and
Eli Zuckerman. Offensively, we just couldn't find our groove as the Salve pitchers kept us off balance the majority of the day. They were the better team, in all facets today."
Salve Regina did not score again until the fifth inning. Tristan Dacey singled through the right side to reach base. DeFusco then doubled to center field before advancing to third as Dacey made the sprint to home plate. Gherardi scooped up the ball and launched it senior
Matthew Pasko at shortstop, who turned and fired to classmate
Matt Branco at home for the putout.
With DeFusco on third, Anthony Cieszko singled through the left side to bring in the Seahawks' fourth run of the game.
In the top of the sixth, Vincent Sorrentino walked to reach first base. After Ketch flied out to sophomore
Roy Iversen on the mound, Eremian hit the ball over the fence to give Salve Regina a 6-0 lead.
The Ducks scored their lone run of the game in the bottom of the sixth. Falconite walked before Gherardi hit a single to advance the Marlboro, New Jersey native to third. Paulich then hit the ball towards the third baseman, who was able to throw out Gherardi at second, but allowed Falconite to reach home plate. Rood followed with a double to put Paulich in scoring position, but Branco then grounded out to the shortstop to end the inning.
The Seahawks added their final run in the ninth inning when Eremian walked with the bases loaded to bring in Zack Barlok.
Counton registered two strikeouts in his collegiate debut, while Zuckerman pitched a scoreless eighth inning and struck out three batters.
