No. 4 Men's Volleyball Earns First Conference Win Over Elmira

HOBOKEN, N.J. (February 8, 2019)  – Junior David Lehman registered 10 kills as the No. 4 Stevens Institute of Technology men's volleyball team defeated Elmira College in three sets (25-18, 25-22, 25-17) Friday evening in the first United Volleyball Conference matchup of the year. 

Senior Jacob Patterson dished out 36 assists for the Ducks, who improved to 6-1 on the year and 1-0 in the UVC. 

Elmira was led by Jose Malave with nine kills. The Soaring Eagles fell to 5-5 overall and 0-1 in conference action.

Volleys and Points
  • The Ducks opened the match scoring the first three points after a kill by senior Dylan DeBoer followed by two attack errors by Elmira. 
  • The Soaring Eagles got on the board after Garrett Coleman set down a pass from Jeremy Best.
  • Stevens took a 13-5 lead after a 5-0 run capped off by another DeBoer kill.
  • Ryan McDonough ended the run with a kill.
  • Back-to-back kills by freshman Stedman van Arsdale put the Ducks up 15-6.
  • Two kills from both sophomore Jack Bittker and junior Jonathan Frenzel followed by a van Arsdale kill gave Stevens a 20-11 lead. 
  • Declan Quinn delivered a kill followed by an attack error by the Ducks.
  • An Elmira service error gave the Ducks their 25th point to end the first set.
  • Garrett Coleman delivered the first kill of the second set to put Elmira on the board first. 
  • Lehman set down a Patterson pass followed by two attack errors by the Soaring Eagles to give Stevens a 3-1 advantage. 
  • Back-to-back kills from Bittker followed by an Elmira bad set put the Ducks up 6-2.
  • Elmira shortened their deficit to one after an attack error by Stevens, a Malave kill and an ace from Coleman.
  • The Ducks took a 15-10 lead after Bittker and junior Andrew Amerman blocked an attempt by Coleman.
  • Elmira went on a 4-0 run that included kills from Coleman and Matt Straney along with a Malave ace and a Stevens' attack error. 
  • Amerman issued a kill to close out the second set. 
  • The Ducks earned the first point of the final set after a service error by Elmira. 
  • Straney tied the score at one after delivering a kill.
  • The Ducks took a 6-3 lead after a Bittker ace. 
  • Elmira tied the set at 10 after Stevens committed two errors and Straney set down a pass from Best.
  • Lehman delivered a kill and Coleman registered an attack error to put the Ducks back in the lead.
  • Stevens went on a 4-0, taking a 23-15 advantage after a kill from freshman Zachary Evans and three-straight errors by Elmira.

  • Lehman set down a pass from Patterson to end the match.

Inside the Numbers
  • Freshman Alexei Nikiforov delivered his first collegiate ace. 
  • Amerman led the Ducks with three blocks. 
  • Ryan Branigan collected a game-high eight digs. 
  • van Arsdale finished with a .667 hitting percentage, delivering four kills on six attempts.
  • Jeremy Best led the Soaring Eagles with 31 assists. 
  • Elmira recorded their best hitting percentage in the first set with .286.
  • Patterson dished out all but one of Stevens' assists.
  • The Ducks held the edge in kills, 38-36.

From the Court
  • "Winning is always the goal, but tonight had a little more meaning since it was our first home match of the season and our first conference match," stated assistant men's volleyball coach Austin Voges. "We did a really nice job running middle in the first two sets. Jon and Stedman looked very strong. Jacob did a great job as our time hit almost .400 on the night and Dave was able to capitalize on the shorter outsides."
