HOBOKEN, N.J. (February 9, 2019) – Four players issued double-digit kills as the Stevens Institute of Technology men's volleyball team defeated Massachusetts Institute of Technology 3-1 (21-25, 25-17, 25-14, 25-22) and swept Baruch College (25-13, 25-19, 25-17) at the Stevens Tri-Match Saturday at Canavan Arena.
In the first match against conference foe MIT, junior
David Lehman led the Ducks with a season-high 18 kills. Sophomore
Jack Bittker followed with 13 kills and match-highs of seven digs and four aces. Stevens improved to 2-0 in the United Volleyball Conference.
MIT was led by Skyler Kaufman with 10 kills and Yize Dong with a match-high 34 assists. The Engineers fell to 5-2 overall and 0-2 in the UVC.
Sophomore
Ryan Byrne totaled a career-high 17 kills against Baruch, while junior
Kyle Warnock added 11. Classmate
Grant Burden led in the assists column with 30 touches for the Ducks, who saw their overall record improve to 8-1.
The Bearcats were led by Artem Zinkin with 10 kills and Meni Musheyev with five blocks. Baruch fell to 3-7 on the year.
Volleys and Points (MIT)
- Steven Timberman scored the first point of the match with a kill.
- Freshman Stedman van Arsdale answered after setting down a pass from senior Jacob Patterson.
- The Engineers went on a 6-1 run to take a 10-5 lead capped off by a kill from Thomas Nelson.
- Back-to-back kills from Lehman brough the Ducks within three points.
- Two attack errors by Stevens gave MIT a 17-10 lead.
- Another pair of kills from Lehman shorted the Ducks deficit.
- Yize Dong set down the ball for the final point of the set, giving MIT a 1-0 lead.
- MIT opened the second set with a 3-0 lead that included an ace from Dong and two Ducks attack errors.
- An attack error by Nelson put the Ducks on the board, followed by a van Arsdale kill.
- Stevens took a 5-4 lead after the Engineers committed three consecutive errors.
- Cole Linnus tied the set after setting down a pass from Dong.
- Two kills from Bittker along with an MIT attack error put Stevens up 8-5.
- The Ducks took a 13-7 lead after two errors by the Engineers, a kill and an ace from Bittker and a kill from sophomore Ryan Byrne.
- Stevens controlled the tempo for the rest of the match, scoring nine of their remaining 12 points on kills and aces.
- Bittker set down a pass from junior Grant Burden to tie the match 1-1.
- The Ducks took an early 6-2 lead after kills from Bittker, van Arsdale and junior Jonathan Frenzel and an ace from freshman Jack Fyda.
- MIT cut the lead to two after a kill by Skyler Kaufman followed by an attack error by Lehman.
- Byrne then set down a pass from Burden and Bittker delivered two-straight kills to give the Ducks a five-point lead.
- Back-to-back kills from Brett Allen brought the Engineers within three.
- The Ducks went on a 6-0 to win the third set after Byrne delivered two kills, Lehman set down a pass from senior Niko Lambert and Burden issued an ace.
- Lehman delivered the first kill of the final set, followed by an MIT kill by Colton Stearns.
- The teams traded points before a Stearns attack error and a kill by Frenzel put the Ducks on top, 10-7.
- Back-to-back Kaufman kills brought the Engineers within one point.
- Bittker then delivered a kill followed by an ace.
- MIT tied the set at 13 after two errors by Stevens and another kill from Kaufman.
- The Ducks tried to distance themselves after a kill from junior Dylan DeBoer and an attack error by MIT, but two errors by Stevens tied the set at 17.
- A short 3-0 run gave the Ducks a 23-20 lead.
- Despite a kill from DeBoer, two Stevens' attack errors made the score 24-22.

- An MIT service error gave Stevens the final point of the match.
Volleys and Points (Baruch)
- van Arsdale and junior Kyle Warnock blocked an attempt by Andrew Tsororos to earn the first point of the match.
- Nicholas Godino issued a kill to put Baruch on the board.
- The Ducks took a 5-1 lead following two errors by the Bearcats and back-to-back kill from Warnock.
- Baruch brought themselves back within one point after kills from Godino and Tsororos.
- DeBoer and Byrne each delivered a kill before DeBoer issued an ace to give Stevens a 15-8 lead.
- Godino answered by setting down a pass from Edward Grinberg.
- Stevens developed a 10-point lead after three consecutive kills from DeBoer, Byrne and Frenzel, respectively.
- Kills from Byrne and van Arsdale gave the Ducks the final points of the set.
- Jacob Rudin issued a kill followed by Godino and Musheyev blocking an attempt by Warnock to take a 2-0 lead to start the second set.
- Byrne and Frenzel then each set down a pass from Burden before Warnock and Frenzel blocked a Godino attempt to put the Ducks up 3-2.
- Musheyev issued a kill to tie the set.
- Stevens took a 13-6 lead that included eight kills from the Ducks, followed by two attack errors by Baruch.
- The Bearcats shortened the lead to four points after Godino registered a kill and a block assist while Tsororos set down a pass from Grinberg.
- Byrne set down a pass from Burden to end the short-lived run.
- With Stevens up 18-12, back-to-back kills from Musheyev and Zinkin and an attack error by the Ducks brought Baruch within three points.
- Four of Stevens' next six points were from kills by DeBoer, van Arsdale and Warnock.
- Byrne gave the Ducks the final point of the set after blocking an attempt by Grinberg.
- The Ducks opened the final set with a 5-0 lead.
- Rudin put Baruch on the board with a kill followed by an attack error by Stevens.
- Back-to-back Byrne kills gave the Ducks a 9-4 lead.
- Zinkin issued two consecutive kills to bring the Bearcats within three points.
- Stevens took a 19-12 lead after three errors by Baruch and a Warnock kill.

Unsung Hero
- van Arsdale led the Ducks against MIT with a .500 hitting percentage, issuing five kills on eight attempts with just one error. The Westport, Connecticut native added four block assists and a dig against the Engineers.
Inside the Numbers (MIT)
- The Ducks delivered season-highs of 52 kills and 47 assists.
- MIT held the edge in blocks, 8-7.
- Stevens held the Engineers to a hitting percentage under .200 for the first three sets. MIT hit .304 in the final set.
- The Ducks hit .500 in the third set.
- Three Engineers tallied six digs.
- Burden dished out 32 assists while Patterson added 13.

- The Ducks registered a whopping .615 hitting percentage in the first set, tallying 17 kills on 26 attempts with just one error.
