Women's Tennis comes up short against Hamline

Women's tennis suffer first set back since September

ORLANDO, FLA. (March 17, 2019) – The Stevens Institute of Technology women's tennis team returned to action on Sunday after a long hiatus from their historic fall season and fell to Hamline University 6-3. The 2018 Empire 8 conference champions suffered their first loss since September and drop to 10-2 on the year. Hamline snapped the Ducks eight match win streak and improve their record to 4-4.

Senior Julia Earl and sophomore Makenna Sargis got the first point on the board for the Ducks by putting together a solid 8-1 win at No. 2 doubles. The duo improves their season record to an impressive 7-1. Hamline University seized the momentum as they took next two double flights by a score of 8-5 respectively, and a 2-1 lead in the match score heading into singles.

Hamline struck first in singles taking the No.2 and No. 4 flights to increase their lead to 4-1. The Ducks were determined to not go down quietly and needed to win the next four single flights to complete the comeback. Freshman Alexis Fuda got things going in the right direction and continues to impress in her first season at Castle Point, she remained unbeaten on the year after posting a straight set victory 6-2, 6-4 in the fifth singles flight. Junior Isabella Calandra kept it rolling and secured the third team point for the Ducks thanks to a decisive 6-2, 6-2 victory in the No. 3 singles flight. Unfortunately, the Ducks could not complete the comeback as Hamline University secured the win by taking first and sixth singles flights to close out the match.

"Great battle across the board today from the ladies. Very happy with the team's attitude and energy on the court," remarked Head Assistant Coach Arik Zeevy. "Although we came up short we learned a lot from today's match and are looking forward to the challenges ahead of us this week."
