Women's Tennis Falls to Grinnell

Women's Tennis loses second consecutive match in Florida

ORLANDO, FLA. (March 18, 2019) – The Stevens Institute of Technology women's tennis team took the courts today in the Sunshine State against a formidable Midwest team in Grinnell College. The Pioneers proved to be too much for the Ducks and took the match 9-0. With the loss Stevens drops to 10-3 on the year while Grinnell improves to 10-3.

The Pioneers got off to a hot start and took the first two double flights to jump out to an early 2-0 lead. Junior Joilin Gomez and senior Jill Hawden made their fourth appearance at No. 3 doubles. The duo put forth a great effort but dropped the flight 8-5 and Grinnell completed the doubles sweep to make it 3-0 heading into singles.

The Ducks were very competitive in the single flights but were unable to get on the scoreboard. Grinnell won the No. 5, 3 and 4 single flights in that order to secure the match victory but didn't stop Stevens from battling hard in the last three contested single flights. Senior Captain Julia Earl took the first set 6-3 but Grinnell's Izzy Green responded by taking the next set 6-4 setting up a winner take all third set in the second singles flight. Earl fell 10-5 to Green in the third set and pushed the Pioneers lead to 7-0. In a similar manner freshman Agatha Malinowksi dropped the No. 1 flight in three sets 6-2, 4-6, 1-0 (12-10) to Abby Nielsen of Grinnell. Nicole Badalyan made her singles debut in the sixth singles flight and battled to very end but loss a three-set thriller in tiebreaker 6-2, 3-6, 7-6 (7-5).

Up Next: The women's tennis team will look to get back to their winning ways against St. Lawrence University on Tuesday, March 19th.
