Max Bailey recorded a game-high three goals and three assists and classmate
Dean Peluso added two goals and matched a career-high with three assists as No. 10/No. 10 Stevens Institute of Technology men's lacrosse scored seven unanswered goals to rally from a three-goal deficit to defeat Springfield College 16-7 Saturday afternoon in a non-conference game at Stagg Field.
Senior
Eric Radbourne netted four goals and sophomore
Ryan Gebhardt and junior
Brendan Monteleone each scored three times as Stevens improved to 3-0 to start the year for the fourth straight season. The Ducks improved to 10-5 all-time against the Pride and have won each of the last three meetings.
Jack Vail had two goals and an assist to lead Springfield, who dropped to 1-1. The Pride failed to reach 10 goals for just the second time in 11 games.
"What a great team effort we had today," said head coach
Gene Peluso. "Tough team to play [against] when you are down 4-1, but I am so proud of our guys for gutting it out and playing a strong [final] three quarters. Much respect to Springfield and their program. Springfield is a quality team that is well coached and they will win a lot of games this year."
"Full team win from the guys on the field and the sideline guys for supporting each other," Peluso continued. "Love to see it."
Freshman
Hunter Brogan added a goal and sophomore
Ryan Caplis added an assist as Stevens scored at least 10 goals for the third straight game and for the 19th time over its last 20.
"Love the game we got from our attackmen," Peluso added. "They played very well and took over from the second quarter on."
Senior
Carson White made 15 saves to earn his third victory of the season. The Downingtown, Pennsylvania native was especially sharp in the final period, stopping all seven shots on goal, allowing Stevens to score six times over the final 15 minutes to break open the game. Cole Finerty made 16 saves for Springfield.
"We got a great game from Carson and our defensive did a nice job of not giving them a lot of quality looks," Peluso said. "When they did get quality looks, Carson did a great job stealing 3 or 4 would-be-goals."
Springfield won the opening faceoff, but for the second straight game, it was the Ducks that took both the first shot and scored the first goal to take an early lead. Turner Garitta coughed up possession after the opening faceoff, which was immediately picked up by freshman
Aidan Hinphy and cleared. Monteleone fired the game's first shot, which Finerty snagged. Springfield coughed the ball in each of its next two possessions, which led to a sustained offensive series and the game's first penalty.
Playing with the man-advantage, Gebhardt netted his first of the game 25 seconds into the power play, taking a Peluso feed to open the game's scoring. Springfield won the ensuing faceoff and Cole Pecora beat White to knot the game at one. The Pride earned each of the next two draws and Joe Hawley and Vail turned the faceoff wins into goals as the hosts opened a 3-1 lead.
Anthony Sullivan scored four minutes into the second period to open a three-goal margin, before the Ducks responded with three goals in a 2:41 span to tie the game at four. Gebhardt converted his second man-up goal of the game to start the sequence, with tallies from Radbourne and Peluso drawing the teams even at four. Gebhardt completed his third hat trick in as many games to reclaim the lead and Peluso found the back of the net on the final play of the first half to give Stevens a 6-4 advantage at the intermission. Nicholas Carnovale won the faceoff after Gebhardt's third goal and sophomore
Shawn Coulter picked up the ground ball to begin Stevens' final offensive possession. Radbourne fired a shot that hit a Springfield defender in front of the net. Peluso deftly pounced on the ground ball and fired a shot past Finerty.
Radbourne wouldn't be denied in the third quarter, scoring consecutive goals to extend the streak to seven. Cameron Glover beat White to bring the Pride back to within five before Brogan and Bailey found the back of the net 78 seconds apart to give the Ducks their largest advantage of the game. Bailey finished the day with six points, bringing his season total to a team-leading 15. The Millersville, Maryland native moved to within seven points of Hall of Famer J.R. Maehler atop the career scoring list.
Vail recorded his second of the game and Tommy Nash also scored as Springfield drew within 10-7 at the end of the third period.
Stevens was able to put the game out of reach in the final quarter, scoring on its first two shots of the period. Cameron won the quarter-opening faceoff and White stopped Hawley on Springfield's first shot attempt. After a successful clear, Coulter stripped Hawley and sophomore
Sean Scadden picked up the loose ball to begin another clear. Monteleone fired wide on Stevens' first shot of the stanza and Bailey scored off the restart to push the Ducks' lead to four. Carnovale won the ensuing faceoff and Bailey found Monteleone for the Mountain Lakes, New Jersey native's first marker of the game. Monteleone would complete the hat trick in the period for his second straight three-goal performance.
Stevens outshot Springfield, 54-35 on the day, including a 32-22 margin in shots on goal. Monteleone recorded a game-high 12 shots, while Bailey had 10 attempts and Peluso took eight as the Ducks saw 10 different players take a shot. Vail and Nash each fired nine to pace the Pride.
Defensively, Monteleone led all players with three caused turnovers as each team forced 15 turnovers. Carnovale led Stevens with six ground balls, while the Pride's Joseph Cameron led all players with seven. Cameron won 12 faceoffs on the day, as Springfield went 14-12 against Stevens in the 'X'. Carnovale collected nine of Stevens' 12 faceoff wins, while junior
Connor Murphy earned the other three. For the day, Stevens outearned Springfield in ground balls 41-29 as 19 different players picked up at least one ground ball.

Stevens went 22-for-24 on clears, while Springfield went 14-of-20. Gebhardt scored twice with the man-advantage as the Ducks went 3-for-5 on extra-man opportunities, while Springfield scored once out of three man-advantage opportunities.
