Brierley Strikes Out 12 as Baseball Tops Elmira

Chandler Brierley struck out a career-high 12 batters as the Ducks topped Elmira 10-1.

HOBOKEN, N.J. (March 24, 2019)  – Junior Chandler Brierley pitched seven shutout innings and struck out a career-high 12 batters as the Stevens Institute of Technology topped Elmira College 10-1 in Sunday afternoon's Empire 8 Conference matchup at Dobbelaar Field.

Brierley earned his first win on the mound with today's start for the Ducks, who improved to 6-9 on the year and 3-0 in E8 play.

"Good sweep, our guys did a good job closing the deal today," commented head coach Kristaps Aldins. "Chandler controlled the tempo on the mound all day and gave us an excellent start. We had a few lulls offensively in the middle innings, but we think our offense is really starting to come alive as we head into conference play."

Junior A.J. Falconite began the scoring for Stevens when he touched home plate following a wild pitch in the first inning. Freshman Chris Silos then reached on a fielding error by the shortstop that allowed classmate Sutton Dole and senior Donny Gherardi to score.

In the bottom of the second, graduate student Tommy Baronner hit a sacrifice fly to center field that brought in senior Carlos Leon. Classmate Matthew Pasko followed by stealing second base before advancing to third on a throwing error by Elmira's catcher. Dole then registered an RBI-double to bring in Pasko and put the Ducks up 5-0.

The next four innings were scoreless until Stevens collected five runs in the seventh. Dole, Gherardi and Pasko each recorded an RBI-single in the inning while Silos hit a two-run double to left field.

The Soaring Eagles were able to tally a run in the ninth inning when Tommy Fogarty singled to right field and allowed Mason Ryan to score. Fogarty then attempted to advance but Falconite hustled to throw the ball to Pasko, who tagged the runner out at second.

Sophomore Tyler Armstrong registered the final two outs of the game as both James Delaney and Jared Money struck out swinging.
