HOBOKEN, N.J. (March 27, 2019) – Freshmen
Tom James and
Sutton Dole along with senior
Matthew Pasko each collected a homerun as the Stevens Institute of Technology split an Empire 8 Conference doubleheader against Ithaca College Wednesday at Dobbelaar Field.
The Ducks dropped the first game of the day to the Bombers as Adam Gallagher and Garrett Snyder each hit a homer. Sophomore
Joseph Deitz (1-2) was handed the loss as he gave up three runs in his two innings on the mound. Tyler Hill (3-0) earned the victory for Ithaca after pitching all seven innings and striking out six batters.
Sophomore
Alex Smith (1-0) pitched three innings and struck out three batters for his first win of 2019, as Stevens topped the Bombers 12-6 in game two. Senior
Danny Poidomani collected his first save of the season after striking out three in just 1.1 innings pitched.
"Our guys battled back to take game two," reflected head coach
Kristaps Aldins. "Smitty was the star of the day by pitching in both ends of the ends of the doubleheader. We move on from here and get ready for yet another big series against St. John Fisher this weekend."
Stevens scored the first run of game one in the bottom of the first before Ithaca rallied for three scores over the next two frames in taking a 3-1 lead.
Graduate student
Tommy Baronner led off with a walk and made his way to third following a passed ball and a failed pickoff attempt. Junior
A.J. Falconite lofted a fly ball to left in which Baronner tagged up and scored the opening salvo for the Ducks.
The Bombers responded with a leadoff home in the top of the second off the bat of Snyder and plated across two more in the top of the third in taking a 3-1 lead. Matt Carey sent a first-pitch double down the right-field line and moved to third on a wild pitch before coming home on a fielder's choice off the bat of Garrett Callaghan.
Webb Little singled through the right side, giving the visitors runners on the corners before Gallagher brought in the second run of the frame on the sac-fly to center.
After trading zeroes over the next two innings, the Bombers added to its lead in the top of the sixth with its second solo home run of the game, this one coming off the bat of Gallagher as Ithaca extended its lead to 4-1.
The Ducks prevented a potential big inning as following a walk to Seth Little, Snyder popped up his bunt attempt back to junior
Michael Frissora, who bobbled the catch, but alertly fired a strike to first to retire Snyder and doubled off Little, who dove back to the bag and was tagged out.
Stevens tallied their final run of the game when James recorded the Ducks' lone homer of the game bottom of the seventh.
Ithaca opened game two with three runs in the top of the first. Gallagher opened the scoring with an RBI single before advancing to second on a fielding error by the left fielder, allowing Callaghan to score. Cam Fuoti singled to right field to send home two runs before being tagged out at second for the third out.
Stevens answered in the bottom of the inning when Dole hit a two-run homer over the right field fence. Junior
Patrick Rood followed with a single before advancing to second on a throwing error by the right fielder to bring in senior
Donny Gherardi.
The Ducks took the lead in fourth inning after Pasko recorded his first homerun of the season.
Following two scoreless innings, the Bombers tacked on two runs in the top of the fifth thanks to a two-run homerun by Buzz Shirley to put Ithaca up by one. In the bottom of the inning, Gherardi singled up the middle, allowing Baronner to touch home plate to tie the game at five.
Pasko and senior
Carlos Leon each hit RBI singles in the bottom of the sixth before Leon scored after a wild pitch and a throwing error to give Stevens a three-run lead.
Shirley cut the deficit to two when he homered on the first pitch of the seventh inning.
Stevens added four runs in the bottom of the eighth to extend their lead to six.
