Olivia Demetres matched a career high with 10 saves, but the Stevens Institute of Technology women's lacrosse team fell to No. 12 Wesleyan University 16-3 Wednesday evening in a non-conference matchup at the DeBaun Athletic Complex. The contest marked Stevens' home opener.
Junior
Kyra Bednarski scored a goal and an assist, while freshmen
Maeve McGovern and
Morgan Westerby also found the back of the net for the Ducks, who fell to 2-6.
Abby Manning had six goals and an assist to lead the Cardinals, who won their third straight to improve to 7-1. Wesleyan moved to 2-1 in the all-time series.
"I thought we played well tonight and I am proud of our effort," said head coach
Karen Shaddock. "Wesleyan is a strong team and they came to play tonight."
Demetres recorded five saves in each half to match her previous career best, set against Dickinson earlier this season. Allegra Grant started for Wesleyan and made three saves to earn the victory. Abby Wolk made a pair of saves over the game's final seven minutes in relief of Grant.
Although Wesleyan scored the first goal of the game on an Abigail Horst marker, the Ducks were able to control play over the game's first 10 minutes, securing three free-position shot attempts, two of which rang off the crossbar and the post, respectively.
Manning and Horst alternated the first five goals of the game as the guests opened a 6-0 lead before McGovern netted her seventh of the year to put the Ducks on the board.
The Cardinals opened the second half with a four-goal run to open a 10-1 advantage. Westerby's eighth goal of the season to pull the Ducks to within eight. Wesleyan would go on to score six of the game's final seven goals to provide the final margin. Bednarski tallied her 31st of the season with just over 10 minutes remaining in regulation to extend her goal scoring streak to 24.
Wesleyan outshot Stevens 34-16, including a 26-8 advantage in shots on goal. Manning fired a game-high seven shots, while Bednarski topped Stevens with four.
Bednarski and Westerby each caused two turnovers as the Ducks forced 16 Wesleyan turnovers. Caitlin Wood and Caroline Sgaglione each caused three turnovers for the Cardinals.
Wesleyan collected 15 draw controls against five for the Ducks. Sgaglione earned a game-high five, while Manning earned four. Westerby earned three for the Ducks, while junior
Emily Shanklin and
Meredith Conlin each earned one.
Wesleyan outearned Stevens in ground balls, 14-13. Demetres led all players with four, while Wood scooped up three to lead the Cardinals.
Stevens went 15-for-20 on clears, while Wesleyan was successful on 15 of its 19 attempts. Wesleyan was successful on four of its nine free-position shots, while the Ducks did not convert any of their five FPS attempts.
