Fast Start Sends No. 11/No. 11 Men’s Lacrosse Over Houghton

Stevens scored nine times in the first quarter en route to conference victory.

HOBOKEN, N.J. (March 30, 2019)  – No. 11/No. 11 Stevens Institute of Technology men's lacrosse scored nine times on 14 first-quarter shots en route to a 21-2 defeat of Houghton College Saturday in an Empire 8 Conference matchup at the DeBaun Athletic Complex.

Freshman Tyler Ryan posted a career-high five points to lead 16 different players with at least one point as the Ducks won their sixth straight to improve to 9-2 and a perfect 2-0 in conference play. Stevens has won all five meetings with Houghton.

Nathan Anderson and Cole Chapman found the back of the net for the Highlanders, who dropped to 3-6 on the year and 0-2 in the Empire 8. Houghton has lost three of its last four.

"It was great to get another conference win today," said 10th-year head coach Gene Peluso. "I was excited that everybody got a chance to play and that we had many contributors on the offensive and defensive ends. I love the play we received from Kiessling at the faceoff 'X' and I thought, [as a team], we did a great job on both ends."

Senior Carson White drew the start and made a save in earning his ninth victory of the season. All five netminders saw action in the cage, with junior Jack Braswell, sophomore Danny Tierney and freshmen Gio Garcia and Grant Petracca combining for four saves.

Jeremy Harris made 10 saves for Houghton.

Ryan led the offense with two goals and three assists. Sophomores Sean Kunz and Nico Ipeker each totaled three goals and an assist. Ipeker has scored on each of his last 10 shots and 13 of his last 16.

Sophomore Ryan Gebhardt had two goals and an assist and senior Max Bailey scored twice as the Ducks crossed the 20-goal threshold for the second time in their last three games. Freshmen Henry Johnson, Evan Eggleston and Jackson Brown each recorded their first collegiate goals, while senior Eric Radbourne, junior Brendan Monteleone, sophomores Tim Spears and Roman Bellisari, along with freshmen Hunter Brogan and Brendan Sullivan each found the back of the net as 14 different players registered at least one goal. Brown and classmates Craig Stockfeder and Joe Ballai each added an assist to round out Stevens' scoring.

The Ducks jumped in front quickly, scoring just 30 seconds into the contest with Bailey whipping a shot past Harris for his 16th of the season. Stevens would go on to add eight more in the period, with five goals coming on six shots over a four-minute stretch to secure a comfortable margin heading into the second quarter.

Stevens continued to put the ball in the net in the second, with Radbourne and a pair of Ipeker markers pushing the lead to 12. Johnson and Brown registered their first collegiate goals before Kunz beat Harris to close out the first-half scoring.

Brogan opened third-quarter scoring, with consecutive goals from Kunz closing out the stanza. Kunz's fourth of the year provided Stevens with its first man-down goal of the year.

Houghton scored twice in the final quarter to spoil the shutout bid and Eggleston added an unassisted goal in the waning minutes to provide the final margin.

Stevens fired 48 shots on the day, including 31 on-goal. Freshman Michael Kraus led all players with seven shots as 19 different took at least one. Jonathan Mayer led Houghton with three.

Defensively, Ryan, sophomore Owen Stempkovski and freshman Emmett Malady each caused two turnovers as Stevens forced 20 Houghton miscues on the day. Thomas Woodward recorded a game-high three caused turnovers to lead the Highlanders.

Senior Nicholas Carnovale led an impressive effort in the 'X', as the Fairfield, New Jersey native went a perfect 6-for-6 on the day. Junior Connor Murphy had five wins, while sophomore Trevor Kiessling matched a career-high with 13 faceoff wins. The Ducks' decisive edge on faceoffs helped Stevens achieve a 47-10 advantage in ground balls. Ballai and Carnovale each scooped up six to lead all players, while Woodward led Houghton with three.

Stevens was a perfect 11-for-11 on clears, while the Highlanders were successful on just 12 of their 27 attempts.

Radbourne's second-quarter tally successfully converted Stevens' man-up opportunity, while the Ducks killed off both of their penalties.
