POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. (March 6, 2019) – Senior
Jacob Patterson dished out a match-high 44 assists as the No. 4 Stevens Institute of Technology men's volleyball team defeated Vassar College in five sets (25-16, 25-19, 18-25, 19-25, 15-13) in Wednesday night's United Volleyball Conference matchup at Kenyon Hall.
Sophomore
Ryan Byrne issued a team-best 15 kills for the Ducks, who improved to 15-2 overall and 6-1 in the conference.
Vassar was led by Jefferson Waters with 18 kills, four blocks and two aces. The Brewers fell to 9-7 on the year and 2-3 in UVC action.
Volleys and Points
- Three errors by the Brewers gave Stevens an early lead to start the match.
- After Kevin Ros and George Diehl each set down a pass from Daniel Halberg, Byrne and sophomore Jack Bittker each issued a kill while Patterson and junior Jonathan Frenzel blocked a Vassar attempt to give Stevens a 9-3 lead.
- The Ducks took an 18-8 lead after four straight attack errors by the Brewers.
- Waters and Ros each delivered a kill in attempt to shorten the gap but Byrne set down a pass from Patterson to win the first set.
- Diehl issued a kill before Ros collected an ace to begin the second set.
- Two errors by Vassar followed by a kill from Byrne put Stevens in the lead.
- Three consecutive errors by the Brewers gave the Ducks a 6-3 advantage.
- Vassar tied the set at eight after Ros set down a pass from Halberg.
- Stevens took back the lead after two errors by the Brewers and a block by Frenzel and junior David Lehman.
- Two kills from Byrne and two aces from freshman Jack Fyda put Stevens up 19-12.
- The team traded points but the Ducks had already gained a large enough lead to allow Byrne to issue a kill for the final point of the second stanza.
- Waters, Diehl and Ryan Duchemin blocked an attempt by Byrne to take the first point of the third set.
- Senior Cooper Diamond set down a pass from Patterson to put Stevens on the board.
- After trading points, Vassar went on a 5-0 run that included two kills from Waters and one from Yoni Auerbach and two errors by Stevens, allowing the Brewers to take an 11-5 lead.
- The Ducks came back within three points following a kill from Bittker and a block by Frenzel and Byrne.
- A kill from Diehl and three errors by Stevens put Vassar up 22-15.
- The Ducks tried to chip away, but three kills from the Brewers ended the third set.
- Vassar took an early 3-1 lead at the start of the fourth set after kills from Diehl and Duchemin.
- A Frenzel kill brought Stevens within one, but the Brewers then extended their lead with a kill by Diehl and two errors by the Ducks.
- Auerbach, Duchemin and Waters each set down a pass before an error by Stevens to give Vassar a 13-7 lead.
- The Ducks fought back and came within three points thanks to two kills from Diamond, one kill from Byrne and an attack error by the Brewers.
- Duchemin then delivered a kill before collecting two blocks with Waters to bring Vassar one point away from the fourth-set victory.
- Byrne set down a pass from Patterson but Duchemin answered with a kill of his own to send the match to a deciding set.
- After Diehl committed an error to give Stevens the first point of the final set, he then blocked an attempt by Byrne with Duchemin to put Vassar on the board.
- The teams traded points before senior Dylan DeBoer issued back-to-back kills to give the Ducks a 6-4 advantage.
- Vassar took a one-point lead following a kill from Diehl, a Stevens error and a block by Diehl and Duchemin.
- The Ducks were then able to take a two-point lead when Waters and Duchemin each committed an error and Byrne registered a kill.
- The Brewers were once again able to take a one-point edge following one kill apiece from Waters and Diehl and another error by Stevens.
- Lehman then set down a pass from Patterson prior to Frenzel and Byrne blocking an attempt by Waters to give the Ducks a 13-12 lead.
- Ros set down a pass from Halberg to tie the set.
Match Point
- DeBoer and Frenzel blocked an attempt by Ros following a Vassar service error to end the match.
Inside the Numbers
- Stevens slightly outhit the Brewers .199-.195.
- The Ducks held Vassar to a negative hitting percentage in the first set.
- Stevens hit over .400 in the first two sets.
- Each team recorded 10 blocks.
- Diamond hit a team-high .389.
- Senior Joshua Hinton tallied 11 digs.
- Lehman and Bittker each collected 11 kills.
- Matt Usui led all players with 13 digs.
Unsung Hero
- Frenzel issued six kills and registered a career-best seven blocks in the five-set victory.
