No. 4 Men’s Volleyball Sweeps Alvernia and Hiram

The Ducks defeated both Alvernia and Hiram in straight sets at the Alvernia Quad Match on Saturday.

READING, Pa. (March 9, 2019)  – Junior Kyle Warnock tallied 21 kills across two matches as the No. 4 Stevens Institute of Technology men's volleyball team swept both Alvernia (25-13, 25-19, 25-18) and Hiram (25-20, 25-12, 25-12) Saturday at Jack McCloskey Court. 

Senior Dylan DeBoer added 18 kills across the two contests as the Ducks improved to 18-2 this season. 

Alvernia was led by Victor de Aliva with nine kills, while Hiram was paced by Tom Supan with seven kills. The teams dropped their overall records to 5-11 and 3-18, respectively.    

Volleys and Points (Alvernia)
  • Stevens opened the first set with an early 5-2 lead thanks to kills from Warnock, senior Cooper Diamond, junior Jonathan Frenzel and sophomore Ryan Byrne.
  • Anthony Dadson ended the short run by the Ducks by setting down a pass from Mike Monczewski. 
  • A kill by Byrne and two errors by the Wolves gave Stevens a 13-6 lead.  
  • Alvernia tried to climb back but Warnock collected four more kills before Byrne delivered an ace to end the first set. 
  • de Avila issued three kills to begin the second set prior to the Ducks committing three errors, giving the Wolves a 6-5 lead. 
  • Stevens then went on a 5-0 run that included a kill from Diamond and DeBoer, a block by Warnock and Diamond and two Alvernia errors. 
  • Dadson ended the streak by setting down a pass from Monczewski.
  • The Wolves tied the set at 12 when the Ducks committed two errors, de Avila tallied two kills and Spencer Matthews set down a Monczewski pass. 
  • A kill and an ace from freshman Jack Fyda along with classmate Stedman van Arsdale collecting a kill before blocking an attempt with junior Grant Burden and DeBoer allowed Stevens to take a 19-14 lead. 
  • Back-to-back kills from Dadson and Josh Stewart brought the Wolves within three points. 
  • Three straight errors by Alvernia gave the Ducks a 23-17 advantage. 
  • Fyda delivered a kill to give Stevens the second-set victory. 
  • The teams began the final set trading points before the Ducks took the lead when freshman Zachary Evans tallied a kill and Warnock registered a block. 
  • The teams continued to trade points until Stevens scored four-straight after two Alvernia errors, a DeBoer kill and Burden delivered an ace.
  • The Wolves kept themselves within three points following an error by the Ducks and a kill from de Avila. 
  • Warnock set down a pass from Burden before DeBoer tallied an ace to give Stevens a 21-14 lead.

  • DeBoer set down a pass from Burden to give Stevens their first win of the day. 

Volleys and Points (Hiram)
  • Warnock opened the second match of the day with a kill.
  • The Ducks took an early 9-3 lead when Burden and Frenzel each collected a kill before DeBoer issued an ace. 
  • Stevens continued to roll through the first set, quickly taking an 18-8 lead that was capped off by back-to-back kills from DeBoer and Warnock. 
  • Colton DeForest delivered two aces and a kill while Supan set down a pass from Jake Lininger to shorten their deficit to five. 
  • Warnock set down a pass from Burden to give the Ducks a 24-18 advantage. 
  • Supan issued a kill before Dangelo Boehner blocked an attempt by Frenzel to bring Hiram within four points. 
  • DeBoer scored the final point of the set with a kill. 
  • Hunter Rock committed an error before setting down a pass from Lininger to begin the second set. 
  • Stevens took a 7-4 lead after two errors by the Terriers. 
  • Hiram tied the set at eight following one kill a piece from DeForest and Andrew Gard. 
  • The Ducks began to distance themselves after a 5-0 run that included a DeBoer kill, a block by Warnock and Evans and an ace from freshman Alexei Nikiforov
  • Supan ended the streak with a kill. 
  • Stevens went on another 5-0 run with two aces and a kill from Warnock, a kill from DeBoer and a Terriers error. 
  • The Ducks committed a service error only to score another five consecutive points to give them a 24-11 lead. 
  • An error by Hiram gave Stevens the final point of the second set. 
  • Stevens opened the final set with a 9-3 lead following kills from Warnock, Byrne and Evans. 
  • DeForest set down a pass from Andrew Diaz to keep Hiram within five points. 
  • The Ducks took a 10-point lead after one kill from both DeBoer and Byrne. 
  • DeBoer, Byrne and freshman Colin Nikc each collected a kill to give Stevens a 24-11 lead.

Inside the Numbers (Alvernia)
  • Stevens outhit the Wolves .371 to .129, including a .650 hitting percentage in the first set. 
  • Jon Demeter led all players with 10 digs. 
  • DeBoer tallied a match-high three aces. 
  • Burden collected a career-best eight digs. 

Inside the Numbers (Hiram)
  • The Ducks slightly edged Hiram in digs, 25-24.
  • Stevens hit an even .500 while holding the Terriers to a .143 hitting percentage.
  • DeBoer and Warnock each registered a season-best hitting percentage of .636 and .556, respectively. 
  • Nikc recorded his first collegiate kill during the third set while registering a career-best 13 assists. 
  • Nikiforov delivered a match-high three aces.
  • Boehner led all players with a .750 hitting percentage. 

Unsung Hero
  • Fyda led the Ducks with nine digs in their match against Alvernia while adding seven kills and an ace.
