ITHACA, N.Y. (April 10, 2019) – Junior A.J. Falconite and senior Carlos Leon each recorded a hit, but the Stevens Institute of Technology baseball team fell in Empire 8 Conference action to Ithaca College 5-0 Wednesday afternoon at Freeman Field.
Junior Chandler Brierley (2-3) struck out six batters in just 4.0 innings on the mound. Sophomore Roy Iversen and junior Michael Frissora followed with 2.0 innings pitched each, while they both collected one strikeout. The Ducks fell to 11-14 this season and 8-4 in the conference.
Emmett Dunn (4-1) earned the win after he struck out seven players in seven innings and only allowed one hit. The Bombers improved to 17-5 on the year and 10-1 in conference play. Their only E8 loss came from Stevens on March 27 (12-6).
"We had our chances today offensively despite the lack of hits, but we just couldn't cash in," stated head coach Kristaps Aldins. "Our pitchers, Chandler, Roy and Friss all did a nice job keeping the game close until the very end."
Webb Little gave Ithaca their early lead in the bottom of the first with a home run to right center. Garrett Snyder added another homer in the third when he sent the ball over the right field fence.
In both the fourth and sixth innings, Buzz Shirley registered an RBI double to extend the Bombers lead. Andrew Wollner brought in the final run of the game when he singled through the right side in the eighth.
Falconite and Leon contributed the only two hits for the Ducks. Both registered singles during the game, including Leon's blast to right field that put Falconite in scoring position on second in the top of the eighth.
Stevens saw their best chance to score in the sixth inning after both graduate student Tommy Baronner and Falconite walked. Leon then reached first on a fielder's choice, as Falconite was out at second. With two outs, senior Donny Gherardi loaded the bases when he was hit by a pitch. Dunn then ended the inning when he struck out yet another batter.
Sophomore Nathan Zuckerman led the Ducks behind the plate with his eight putouts, while Gherardi and freshman Ben Lesher each added four.
