Baseball Takes Two from Canton

The Ducks won both games of an Empire 8 Conference doubleheader Saturday afternoon in Canton, New York.

CANTON, N.Y. (April 13, 2019)  – The Stevens Institute of Technology baseball team swept SUNY Canton in an Empire 8 Conference doubleheader as freshman Ryan Finegan went 4-for-4 at the plate in the 8-6 game one victory while graduate student Tommy Baronner and senior Donny Gherardi each collected three hits as the Ducks won game two 15-2.

Senior Danny Poidomani collected a season-best 13 strikeouts in 4.2 innings on the mound in game one. Sophomore Alex Smith (2-1) earned the win with his 2.1 innings pitched, allowing just two hits and zero runs. Anthony Tur fell to 0-2 for the Roos after giving up the winning run.

In the first inning, sophomore Thomas Paulich hit a two-run homer to give Stevens an early lead. The Roos answered in the bottom of the inning when Brett Hoberman hit a two-run double to right field.

Junior A.J. Falconite registered a base-hit to begin the third inning before advancing to second as Paulich reached base on a fielding error by Canton. Finegan then singled through the right side to load the bases. Senior Carlos Leon followed with a sac-fly to bring in Falconite for Stevens third run of the game.

The Roos took the lead in the bottom of the inning when Brandon Bautista hit a two-run home run and Hoberman collected his second hit with a homer over the right field fence.

After senior Matthew Pasko singled through the right side to start the fourth inning, Baronner reached on a fielder's choice as Pasko was tagged out at second. Baronner then advanced to second on a passed ball before Falconite hit an RBI single up the middle. Paulich followed with an RBI double to tie the game at five.

Both teams added a run in the fifth inning as Pasko and Hoberman each registered RBI singles.

In the top of the sixth, another error by the Roos allowed Paulich to reach first. Gherardi then hit a double up the middle before Finegan hit a two-run single to right field to give the Ducks a lead they would never give up.

Ryan Larsen (4-3) led Stevens in game two with four strikeouts over 8.0 innings pitched. Kieran Gibson (0-2) was handed the loss after giving up nine runs in 2.2 innings on the mound.

Another two-run single from Finegan gave the Ducks a 2-0 lead in the top of the first. Canton tied the game in the bottom of the inning when both Hoberman and Bautista registered RBI groundouts.

Stevens took a one-run lead in the following inning when Baronner singled through the left side for an RBI.

The Ducks scored six runs in the third inning to extend their lead. After Gherardi walked and Finegan singled, Leon singled up the middle to bring in the first run of the inning. Freshman Ben Lesher brought in Finegan with a sac-fly and Pasko brought in two runs when he singled through the left side before advancing to second on the throw.
Baronner then doubled to left field to send home Pasko before scoring the final run of the inning on a single by Gherardi.

Stevens recorded one run in both the fourth and sixth innings before adding four runs in the eighth when Paulich collected two RBI and sophomores Charles Kwong and Ambrose Consol each added one.

"We were a bit sluggish shaking off the rust in game one, but we managed to come away with a win," commented head coach Kristaps Aldins. "Our quality of play and energy was much better in game two and we really need to replicate that tomorrow to get the result that we want."

Up Next: Baseball returns to field for another doubleheader against the Roos tomorrow, April 14 at 9 A.M. and 12 P.M.
