Women's Tennis comes up short against SUNY New Paltz

Ducks fall to undefeated Hawks in a competitive contest

HOBOKEN, NJ (April 10, 2019) – The Stevens Institute of Technology women's tennis team took on undefeated and 2018 SUNYAC Champion SUNY New Paltz on Wednesday at Stevens Tennis Courts. The Ducks were very close to handing the Hawks their first loss of the year but fell 6-3. Stevens drops to 10-6 on the year while New Paltz improves their record to 15-0. "It was a great battle today from our girls. We really showed improvement today since the last time we faced New Paltz in the fall," remarked Head Coach Steve Gachko. "I'm excited to build upon our success today heading into our weekend action."

New Paltz jumped out to an early 2-0 lead after taking the first and second doubles flights. Sophomore Chelsea Braithwaite and freshman Alexis Fuda responded with a solid 8-6 victory in the No. 3 doubles flight to cut into the visiting team's lead heading into the singles competition.

The Ducks got off to a great start in singles thanks to a strong performance by the freshman phenom Alexis Fuda. The Spring Lake, New Jersey native posted a straight-set win over Victoria Zezula 6-0, 6-2 to get the second point on the board for Stevens. The Hawks responded with a straight-set win of their own to take the lead back with four singles flights left. The match came down to the wire with three out of the four remaining flights going to a winner take all third set. Sophomore Makenna Sargis came through with a thrilling come from behind three set victory 2-6, 7-5, 10-5 in the No. 5 singles flight and kept the Ducks comeback hopes alive. New Paltz kept their composure and took the other three singles flights to clinch the win in the battle between conference champions.  

Up Next: The women's tennis team will look to get back on track this weekend against William Smith College on April 14th at Stevens Tennis Courts, the action will start at 10:00 AM.
