HOBOKEN, NJ. (April 14, 2019) – Stevens Institute of Technology women's tennis team was defeated by William Smith College in a non-conference match 9-0 on Sunday at Stevens Tennis Courts. Although it's not displayed in the box score, the Ducks battled throughout the match but had no answer for the visiting squad. William Smith improves their overall record to 10-5 on the year, Stevens falls to 10-7.
"I was very impressed with our competitiveness today despite some of the score-lines," expressed Head Coach
Steve Gachko. "These are the types of matches that help us grow as a team and motivate us to continue to improve."
The Herons jumped out to an early 1-0 lead with a convincing win in the second doubles flight and never looked back. Senior
Julia Earl and sophomore
Makenna Sargis lost a back and forth affair in the No. 1 doubles flight 8-5. Sophomore
Chelsea Braithwaite and freshman
Alexis Fuda were close to getting the first point on the board for the Ducks but came up short in the third doubles flight 8-6.
Fuda came out strong in the No. 3 singles flight, taking the first set 7-5 over Kate Foley. The freshman could not replicate her performance in the next sets and fell 1-6, 7-10 to Foley, denying the Ducks from getting on the board. Earl put together a gritty performance but dropped a three-set thriller to Maggie Bonomo 2-6, 6-4, 7-10. William Smith completed the shut out thanks to strong play by the rest of their line up in singles competition.
Up Next: Stevens Institute of Technology women's tennis team will have one more regular season competition on April 28
th on their home courts. The Ducks will take on future MAC opponent Wilkes University and it will be Senior Day. The match will start 12 PM.
