SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. (April 13, 2019) – The Stevens Institute of Technology men's tennis team was defeated by #21 Skidmore College on Saturday at the Wenger Tennis Courts 6-3. This was the 10
th meeting between the two programs since 2006 with Skidmore having an edge in the series over Stevens. The Ducks gave the highly regarded Thoroughbreds all they could handle but came up a little short in a few flights which proved to be the difference in the match. Skidmore picked up their fifth straight win and improves to 11-4 on the year, Stevens drops to 6-9.
The Ducks got on the board first thanks to freshman
Marc Feliu Gomez and sophomore
Bryan Szayna. The No. 1 doubles team posted a solid 8-2 victory over Noah Williamson and Connor Biernat to give Stevens an early lead. The Thoroughbreds answered by taking the second and third doubles flight to take a 2-1 advantage heading into the singles competition.
Marc Feliu Gomez posted a gritty win in the No. 1 singles flight to get the second point on the board for Stevens. After winning the first set 6-4, the freshman dropped the second set 1-6 but was able to come through in the third set 6-2 and bring the Ducks within striking distance in the team score. Nationally ranked Skidmore was able to defend their home courts thanks to solid play by the bottom of their lineup. The Thoroughbreds would secure the match win with singles wins at No. 2, No.4, No. 5, and No. 6. Sophomore
Mark Kanevsky got one more point on the board for the Ducks by winning a three-set thriller in the third singles flight 7-6 (7-5), 1-6, 1-0 (11-9).
"I'm proud how
Marc Feliu Gomez and
Mark Kanevsky battled in singles to pull out wins in the third set," stated Head Coach
Steve Gachko. "Gomez also got a doubles win with
Bryan Szayna against a top Skidmore team. Overall, we had a solid team effort against a top-25 nationally ranked team."
