Kainer Finishes Seventh at Mondschein Multi Meet

Senior finishes seventh out of 14 competitors in first decathlon of the season.

KUTZTOWN, Pa. (April 13, 2019)  – Stevens Institute of Technology senior Evan Kainer totaled 5,830 points to finish seventh in the decathlon out of 14 competitors Friday evening at the 2019 Mondschein Multi Meet, hosted by Kutztown University.

Additionally, Freshman Aeden Angelone totaled 3,509 points over his first collegiate decathlon.

All totaled, there were two pools of decathletes and Kainer's two-day total ranked eighth among the 28-person field.

"Evan had a strong Day 1, starting with a dominant victory into a headwind in the 100 (.2 faster than any competitors) and subsequently posting the best mark of the field in the long jump," said head coach Lance Harden. "He finished Day 1 on a solid note with several clearances in high jump and his second-fastest open 400 ever."

"On Day 2, he had personal bests in the discus and pole vault," Harden continued. "He performed very well in the javelin during rain showers on a grass runway."

Kainer began his competition with a victory in the 100-meter dash, topping the 15-person field in a time of 11.05 seconds, finishing two-tenths-of-a-second faster than the field. The South Brunswick, New Jersey native followed up his winning performance in the 100 with a victory in the long jump, reaching 6.72 meters to the top the field by f
"Evan is 315 points ahead of where he was last year at this meet.  That bodes well considering that he scored 5,912 at the end of last season, an improvement of 397 points in-season," Harden added. "If he can make similar growth over the course of the next month, then he will be in a position to qualify for NCAA's."

Kainer placed 15th in the shot put (9.28 meters) and tied for 12th in the high jump (1.69 meters), before closing his opening day performance by finishing fifth in the 400-meter dash with a time of 51.89 seconds. The senior totaled 3,307 points over the first five events and sat in fourth place after the first day of competition.
Kainer began his second day with a time of 16.87 seconds in the 110-meter hurdles, which was followed by personal records in both the discus (29.99 meters) and the pole vault (3.65 meters). The senior closed out the competition with a distance of 37.57 meters in the javelin and a time of 5:12.18 in the 1,500.

Competing in his first decathlon, Angelone turned in his strongest performances on the second day of competition, topping the field in the discus with a distance of 36.25 meters and a personal-record distance of 3.45 meters in the pole vault.

"After a so-so Day 1, Aeden rebounded remarkably well with a victory in the discus and a personal best in the pole vault," Harden shared. "He has progressed rapidly, and we are excited to see his continued development with health and consistent training."
