Eight Unanswered Goals Sends No. 11/No. 10 Men’s Lacrosse Over Nazareth 19-11

Second-half scoring spurt powers Men's Lacrosse to ninth straight victory.

NAZARETH, N.Y. (April 13, 2019)  – Eight unanswered goals broke open a one-goal game as No. 11/No. 10 Stevens Institute of Technology men's lacrosse outscored Nazareth College 10-4 in the second half en route to a 19-11 victory Saturday in an Empire 8 Conference matchup at Golden Flyer Stadium.

Senior Eric Radbourne netted a career-high six goals and finished with seven points. Classmate Max Bailey matched Radbourne's point total with a pair of goals and five assists as eight different players recorded at least one point for the Ducks, who won their ninth straight game to improve to 12-2. The victory upped Stevens' mark in the Empire 8 to 5-0 and extended their E8 winning streak to 15, including postseason play. With a 7-0 mark in true road games and just the regular-season finale at Hartwick remaining on the schedule, Stevens has a chance to finish the regular season undefeated on the road, something the team has yet to accomplish under 10th-year head coach Gene Peluso.

"It really was a tale of two halves for us today," Peluso said. "I really like how we played the second half of the game. I thought Carson did a great job of settling in in the third quarter and made some big saves."

"I thought our offense started to click in the second half," Peluso continued. "We received a great game from Radbourne, Peluso, Caplis and Bailey on offense, and from Coulter and White on defense. Nazareth is always a tough and well-coached opponent and we had our hands full early."

Matthew Vanliew had three goals and two assists and Kevin Hussey had a pair of goals and two assists to lead the Golden Flyers, who dropped to 4-9 overall and to 2-3 in league play. Nazareth has dropped four of its last five contests.

Senior Carson White made 15 saves to earn the victory. The Downingtown, Pennsylvania native was especially effective in the third quarter, making nine stops, allowing the Ducks to create seperation. The 15-save performance was White's seventh double-digit save effort of the season. Eric Almquist had 10 saves for Nazareth.

Sophomore Ryan Gebhardt collected his third straight hat trick and finished with four points. Gebhardt ranks second in the conference with 3.43 goals per game and sixth with 4.07 points per game. Classmate Ryan Caplis scored three times for his second career hat trick for the Ducks, who have averaged nearly 19 goals per game over their winning streak. Stevens leads the E8 with 241 goals.

Senior Dean Peluso totaled three goals and two assists for his fourth hat trick of the season and his fifth game with four or more points. Junior Brendan Monteleone added a pair of goals and freshman Brendan Sullivan and sophomore Roman Bellisari each had an assist for Stevens, who evened the all-time series with Nazareth at eight wins apiece."

"We generated good looks throughout the game, but needed to settle down and convert [those looks] into goals," Peluso reflected. "I am glad we finally did that in the third and fourth quarters."

The victory was the 130th of Peluso's career at Stevens. Hall of Famer John Sim is the program's all-time leader with 131 victories, totaled between 1927 and 1950. Peluso can match the record in Stevens' next game and the Baldwin, New York native could potentially become the 133-year old program's all-time career leading in coaching victories on Senior Day.

Senior Nicholas Carnovale won the game's opening faceoff. The Ducks entered their first offensive series and Radbourne provided an early spark, beating Almquist with an shot from the slot to give the Ducks the early advantage. The Guelph, Ontario, Canada native ended the day four tallies shy of his 100th career goal.

An interference penalty gave the Ducks the first power play of the game and Radbourne converted, beating Almquist for the second time for his fifth man-up goal of the season. Vanliew and Hussey followed with goals to even the score with less than five minutes remaining in the opening period.

The resilient Stevens squad responded with a pair of markers to again reclaim a two-goal advantage. Jack Crowley beat White for his 16th of the year to draw Nazareth within one after the opening period.

Max Bailey opened second-quarter scoring with his 22nd goal of the year. Similar to Radbourne, the Millersville, Maryland native finished the day one tally shy of his 100th career goal.

Nazareth responded with three straight goals to take its first lead of the game, but the Ducks closed the half with four of the next five goals to take a 9-7 lead into the intermission. Peluso beat Almquist to begin and end the sequence as Stevens quickly responded to its first deficit in nearly 30 quarters.

Vanliew opened the third quarter with his second of the game to draw the Golden Flyers within one, but Bailey's second goal of the afternoon and a smothering defensive effort led to eight unanswered tallies that turned the one-goal game into a comfortable 17-8 margin. During the sequence, six different players scored, White made nine saves, and the Ducks forced one turnover.

Jon Lippert beat White to stop the scoring run and Anthony Basile added his 23rd of the year to trim the margin to seven. The Ducks collected two of the final three goals to provide the final margin.

Stevens outshot Nazareth 55-40, including a 30-17 mark in the first half. Monteleone took 11 attempts to lead all players, while Hussey paced Nazareth with seven. Despite the 15-shot edge, the teams were somewhat evenly-matched in shots on goal with Stevens totaling 29 against 26 for the Golden Flyers. The Ducks were especially efficient in the second half with 10 of the team's 13 shots on goal finding the back of the net.

Defensively, Stevens forced 13 Nazareth turnovers, with sophomores Jason Coyle and Sean Scadden each causing two. Tristan Gosselin and Walker Denton each registered two caused turnovers for Nazareth, who forced Stevens into 16 on the afternoon.

Nazareth won 20 of the 34 faceoffs. Tim Vinton went 17-12 for Nazareth in the 'X', while Jared Miglorie garnered the other three wins for the Golden Flyers. Carnovale had eight of Stevens' 14 faceoff wins on the afternoon and moved into third place all-time with 410 career victories. Junior Connor Murphy earned the other six wins in the 'X' for the Ducks.

Each team picked up 32 ground balls. White snagged a season-high seven to lead the Ducks, while Carnovale and sophomore Shawn Coulter each picked up four. Tim Vinton scooped up seven to lead the Golden Flyers.

Stevens was successful on 23 of its 26 clearing attempts, while Nazareth was successful on 19 of its 21 tries.

A physical contest, the teams combined for 15 penalties. Stevens scored twice on the man-advantage with Radbourne netting a pair of power-play goals. Nazareth converted four power plays into a pair of goals with Crowley and Anthony Basile taking advantage of the extra-man opportunity.
