Women's Tennis Rolls Past St. Joseph's-LI for First Ever NCAA Win

Ducks making the most of their first ever NCAA Tournament, shut out St. Joe's

MIDDLEBURY, VT. (May 10, 2019) – Stevens Institute of Technology Women's Tennis took out St. Joseph's-Long Island 5-0 at Middlebury Indoor Tennis Courts on Friday. This was a historic day for the Ducks as they secured their first ever NCAA win and move on to a second-round match up against No. 9 Tufts University on Saturday. Senior captain Julia Earl clinched the match for Stevens with a straight-set win at No. 2 singles and is looking forward to their match against the highly touted Jumbos.

"It was a great feeling to see our name in the draw this year for NCAA's after so many years of getting close but coming up short. The team has really built off our success in the Fall and went in today's match prepared to leave it all on the court," stated Julia Earl. "We started off strong sweeping doubles and used that energy to propel us through singles to a 5-0 victory. This is an amazing group of women to be surrounded by and play with, and I am looking forward to not only tomorrow but the future for this team."

Junior Isabella Calandra and freshman Agatha Malinowski put the Ducks up early with a solid 8-2 win in the second doubles flight over Post, Amanda / Burnett, Nora. Julia Earl and sophomore Makenna Sargis kept the momentum going thanks to an 8-4 victory at No. 1 doubles flight. Freshman Alexis Fuda and sophomore Chelsea Braithwaite completed the doubles sweep with an 8-4 win in the third doubles flight over Martocci, Mackenzie / Caporale, Alana.

The 2018 Empire 8 Champions made quick work of the Golden Eagles in singles competition to secure the win. Malinowski defeated Amanda Post in straight-sets 6-1, 6-1 in the No. 1 singles flight to push the Ducks lead to 4-0 and Earl followed suit in No. 2 singles to clinch the match.

"Today is an extremely exciting day for the program. To pick up a win in our first NCAA tournament appearance is very special, and something we certainly don't take for granted," remarked Head Assistant Coach Arik Zeevy. "After battling through some early nerves, the girls did a great job settling down and really controlled the match from start to finish."
Stevens will face stiff test in Tufts University tomorrow, the Jumbos received an At-Large Bid to the NCAA Championships and compete in the tough NESCAC. The match will start at 12:30 PM, you can follow all the action through the live stat game cast.
