Men's Tennis Tops NYU

The Ducks win three singles flights in a row to clinch the match

Box Score HOBOKEN, NJ. (April 17, 2019) – The Stevens Institute of Technology men's tennis took on New York University in a non-conference match on Wednesday at Stevens Tennis Courts. These two programs are very familiar with each other with Stevens and NYU splitting the last ten match ups. The Ducks defeated the Violets 5-4 and improved their overall record 8-9, while the Violets drop to 6-6. Stevens has defeated NYU for the second consecutive season and extend their current match winning streak to two.

The visiting team struck first by taking the third doubles flight but Stevens finished the doubles competition strong. Sophomore Bryan Szayna and Marc Feliu Gomez got it rolling for the Ducks by recording an 8-3 win at the No. 1 doubles flight to even up the team score. The sophomore duo of Mark Kanevsky and Gabriel Sifuentes came up with big with an 8-7 win in the second doubles flight to give the Ducks a 2-1 lead heading into the singles competition.

NYU evened up the team score by taking the No. 3 singles flight in straight-sets but Stevens again had an answer to swing momentum back into their favor. Marc Feliu Gomez recorded a straight-set win in the first singles flight 6-2, 6-4 to give Stevens lead on the scoreboard. Mark Kanevsky and Keegan Morris secured the match win for the Ducks after posting solid wins in their respective singles flights. Kanevsky won his first set 7-6 and then cruised to a 6-3 win in the second set to secure the fourth team point for Stevens. Morris put together a gritty performance and outlasted his NYU counterpart 7-5, 7-5 to secure the pivotal fifth point for the Ducks. Sifuentes almost made it 4 answered wins for the Ducks but dropped a three-set battle in the fifth singles flight.  

"We couldn't be prouder of how our guys competed and represented Stevens today," expressed Head Assistant Coach Arik Zeevy. "It's fun to watch this young team improve and grow together with each match, and we can't wait to get back to work with them this weekend."
