Baseball Sweeps Houghton in E8 Doubleheader

The Ducks held off Houghton in both games of a conference doubleheader Saturday afternoon on the road.

HOUGHTON, N.Y. (April 27, 2019)  – The Stevens Institute of Technology baseball team swept Houghton College, 5-0 and 6-3, Saturday afternoon in an Empire 8 Conference doubleheader at Kerr-Pegula Athletic Complex Baseball Field.

The Ducks improved to 16-18 on the year and 12-5 in the conference while the Highlanders fell to 10-20 overall and 5-9 in E8 action.

Senior Danny Poidomani (2-3) pitched all seven innings of game one with seven strikeouts and just three hits. Brandon Joslin (2-6) was dealt the loss despite his five strikeouts in six innings on the mound.

The game remained scoreless until senior Carlos Leon hit an RBI single up the middle in the top of the fourth. Classmate Matthew Pasko made the score 2-0 when he brought in freshman Ryan Finegan with a sac-bunt in the next at bat.

Stevens added three more runs in the top of the seventh when sophomore Nathan Zuckerman and graduate student Tommy Baronner scored as junior A.J. Falconite reached first when Caleb Philips picked up the Marlboro, New Jersey native's bunted ball and overthrew the first baseman. Senior Donny Gherardi also reached on an error, allowing Falconite to score the final run of the first game.

Junior Chandler Brierley (3-3) earned the win with eight strikeouts in five innings pitched. Griffin Tubbs (4-3) gave up four runs in six innings on the mound to be handed the loss while senior Ryan Larsen earned the save with his eight strikeouts over four innings.

Sophomore Thomas Paulich brought in the first run of the second contest with a sac-fly in the first inning before Finegan hit an RBI single up the middle. The freshman recorded another base hit up the middle in the top of the third to bring in Falconite prior to senior Matt Branco collecting an RBI groundout, making the score 4-0.

Jared Couch put the Highlanders on the board in the bottom of the inning when he scored on a passed ball. In the following inning, Jeremy Newswanger added a run when he advanced from second to third on a failed pickoff attempt and then scored on a fielding error by Finegan.

Branco brought in the final two runs for the Ducks with a single up the middle that allowed Gherardi and Paulich to score. The Highlanders were unable to score again until David Wessells hit an RBI single in the bottom of the ninth before Larsen struck out his final batter to end the game.

"Today we got two nice conference wins on the road and clinched our spot in the upcoming E8 Tournament," commented head coach Kristaps Aldins. "We came ready to play after a long bus ride and it was good to see us play a more aggressive offensive style of baseball throughout the day in both ends of the doubleheader. On the mound, Danny, Chandler and Ryan all competed well and helped lead us to these victories."
