Late Rally Comes Up Short as Baseball Falls to NYU

The Ducks dropped a non-conference game against NYU 14-10 Thursday evening at Dobbelaar Field.

HOBOKEN, N.J. (May 2, 2019)  – Junior A.J. Falconite recorded four RBI on two hits as the Stevens Institute of Technology baseball team fell short to New York University 14-10  in non-conference play Thursday evening at Dobbelaar Field.

Senior Ryan Larsen (4-5) was dealt the loss after giving up nine runs in 1.2 innings pitched, while Aaron Ackerman (2-2) earned the win.

Jack Walter gave NYU a quick lead as he homered on the first pitch of the game. Jack Elias followed with a two-run double before Grant Berman hit the second home run of the inning to give the Violets a 5-0 lead at the end of the opening frame.

NYU added three runs in the top of the second with an RBI triple from Colman Hendershot, a two-run single by Cooper Halpern and an RBI single by Coltrane Tait. Ryan McLaughlin chipped in with an sac-fly in the third inning to bring in Chris Cassandra and put the Violets up 10-0.

The Ducks answered in the bottom of the third when Falconite doubled to right center with the bases loaded, allowing junior Patrick Rood and senior Matthew Pasko to score. With Falconite and graduate student Tommy Baronner on base, sophomore Thomas Paulich collected his second homer of the year to cut Stevens' deficit to five.

After Austin Stenstedt hit the Violets' third home run of the night in the top of the fourth, Falconite registered a two-run homer following a 45 minute rain delay in the bottom of the inning to bring the Ducks within four.

Halper recorded his second hit of the game with a two-run triple to right field in the fifth before scoring as Stenstedt reached first on an error by a sophomore Roy Iversen to extend NYU's lead to seven.

Pasko began the rally for the Ducks with his RBI single in the bottom of the fifth to start chipping away at the lead. The Ringoes, New Jersey native added another run in the seventh inning when he sent in freshman Ryan Finegan on a sac-fly. Baronner followed with an RBI single through the left side, but Rood was tagged out at third on the play for the final out of the game.

"I am proud of our team's resilience to fight back from a 10-0 hole in the early-goings," commented head coach Kristaps Aldins. "We had some magic going in our last at bat and it was starting to look like we may be celebrating in walk-off fashion. There is no doubt that it was certainly frustrating to end the game on the bases with the top of the lineup coming up the way it played out. But we saw how potent our lineup is, top-to-bottom, and we'll have another chance to take the field in the next few days for a tune-up before the E8's"
